My preschooler and I both had a great time doing this easy kids craft for Valentine’s Day. I wanted a homemade Valentine’s Day decoration, and I think conversation hearts are so cute (though not so tasty). So we made our own paper conversation hearts and made them into a homemade Valentine’s Day wreath. Not only did we have fun, this Valentine’s Day craft was very frugal – just a few cents for construction paper and tape!
I made a heart template by cutting a heart shape out of a cereal box and cutting it in half. Then I just put it on my folded construction paper and cut around it. This went a lot faster than all the little hearts I cut out to make our Love Bug Valentine’s Day cards the other day. I cut 3 inch hearts out of white, yellow, orange, green, purple, and pink construction paper, which I bought at the dollar store.
Next, write sayings on your paper conversation hearts. Some of the messages we copied from actual conversation hearts candy, some I made up, and some Maggie came up with on her own. She only needed help with a few of the letters – I’m so proud of her!
Once the paper conversation hearts all had sayings written on them, we turned them over and taped them into a circle. You could also use a glue gun to attach them to a dollar store wreath, or create a wreath out of chipboard (like an old cereal box). We just taped our conversation hearts together into a wreath shape and taped it on the wall.
I was originally going to write that older kids could make up their own conversation heart sayings, but my three year old tried her hand at them as well. A few of hers: Flower, Pooh, and a picture of a lady bug.
