How to Save on Organic Foods

It can seem like balancing your desire to feed your family healthy, organic food conflicts with your grocery budget.  Here are 5 ways to make the most of your food budget by buying organic where it counts.

1. When buying fresh fruits and veggies, only buy organic if you're going to eat the skin.  For example, choose conventional oranges, and organic apples.

2. If you want to stay away from rBST in milk, you may not need to buy the expensive brand.  I buy rBST-free store brand milk at Walmart. Many other stores only buy from farmers who pledge not to use artificial growth hormones.  Just read the labels.

3. Rather than spending more money on organic bread (which is probably still very processed), look for whole-grain bread with few ingredients.  Better yet, make your own!

4. If you buy organic, don't overlook coupons.  More and more organic food manufacturers are offering coupons for their products.  Check out your favorite brands on Facebook, or on the manufacturer website for printable coupons, or to sign up for mailing lists.  Here are just a few organic and natural companies that frequent offer coupons:

5. Saving on meat when you want to eat naturally can be especially difficult.  The easiest way to save is by reducing the amount of meat you eat each week. Also, look for organic meat or chicken in bulk, and keep the extra on hand in your freezer.

The cows eat predominately grain and are grass-fed only while they are not being milked — about two to three months out of the year.
