Saving on Date Night

I am a firm believer in date nights with my husband. With two kids at home, it is crucial to get time away to reconnect with your spouse. However, our budget doesn't always allow for dinners out at lavish restaurants. We live in wine country and there are a lot of pricey options. I am by nature a saver and am always looking for fun on the cheap! -We never pay for a babysitter. The grandparents live nearby, and they are kind enough to sit. Also, my DD has just turned 13 and can now watch her brother. We invested in a babysitter training course for her through the Girl... read more

How to save money on meat...tips!

The way I save on meats is to buy it when it goes on sale so generally I'll head to the market in the morning after dropping my son off at school. The meat is near its expiration date so plan on using this meat that same day or freeze. Just ask your butcher about their mark down schedule. Buy less expensive cuts of meat by tenderizing, marinating and consider slow roasting or throw it into a crock pot recipe. Don't buy the already formed and frozen ground beef for burgers, instead buy fresh ground beef and make them yourself. When shopping for chicken, fish or a... read more

A few years ago, I took a new job, and we relocated to the High Plains.  I was accustomed to having five grocery chains (with multiple stores from each chain within driving distance), three farmer's markets, various road-side produce stands, and my own little garden plot in the back yard.  Needless to say, I got sticker shock when I went to the grocery here the first few times!  We had two - count 'em, TWO!  locally owned, mom-and-pop style grocery stores in our new town.  The next nearest town was a 25 minute drive, and the "big city" took an hour to get to.  I knew... read more

When I hear the amounts that people are spending on groceries every week, I am amazed.   I was watching one show in particular where a lady filled her cart with groceries, and the total came to over $400.  For one cart of groceries?  How is that even possible?  The coupon experts came along and rescued her, showing her how she could get the same groceries (or similar ones) for about 10% of what she had been prepared to spend.   I've been spending an average of $300/month for years - and that buys everything - groceries, cleaning supplies, toiletries, my clothing. ... read more

How I provide for a household of seven!

As a single mom to five kids living at home, along with a grandchild, I can tell you that providing for them all on my income is no easy feat!  One of the ways I do it is to comparison shop.  Store ads are there for a reason...to lure us in.  But, you can use that to your advantage.  Price compare!  Keep a running list each week on paper.  If one store has an item on sale for cheaper than the other, mark it down.  BUT, do not allow yourself to run all over town trying to get the best prices.  Instead, when you have tallied up for what you need, find the top two stores... read more

My money saving tips with 2 kids under the age of 2

I have two boys that are 2 and under and we are a one income family.  Since my oldest is still not potty trained, the cost of diapers and wipes add up quickly.  One thing that I do to save money on wipes is by making my own.  With one roll of Bounty paper towels, 1 1/4 cup water, and 1 TBS each of baby oil and baby wash, I can fill 2 wipe containers and the wipes last me almost up to 2 weeks.  One roll of regular Bounty paper towels has 52 sheets per roll so you are getting 104 wipes for a fraction of the cost of store bought!  As far as the coupons I get for wipes, I... read more

A Coupon Newbie's Guide for Saving a Few Bucks

I’m busy, as in I don’t have time to pee-during-the-day-busy.  I wake up at about 6am, get the kids school stuff together, get my husband out the door to work, get myself ready, get the kids ready, get them off to school, and then head into the office.  After the office, I get home, make sure homework is done, and start shuttling children to various activities – oh, and coordinate kids eating schedules with my husband.  The last thing that I want to do is spend hours cutting coupons, comparing prices, and running all over town (especially since we live in the country... read more
