creative-kids-toys-and-crafts-on-a-budget

Creative play is important for kids’ development—and you don’t need expensive plastic toys to inspire it. My preschooler really wanted this for Christmas ($199 on Amazon—out of our budget so I didn’t even check stores):       But what she got was this:     It was a two-step process: First de-cluttering the closet and getting rid of a lot of things we didn’t use.  Second, building the door. It took a few hours one Saturday, but the cardboard was free (We order a lot from Amazon.com and save with their Amazon Mom account) and have a lot of boxes... read more

save-money-on-your-groceries

  • by bcmom

When I hear the amounts that people are spending on groceries every week, I am amazed.   I was watching one show in particular where a lady filled her cart with groceries, and the total came to over $400.  For one cart of groceries?  How is that even possible?  The coupon experts came along and rescued her, showing her how she could get the same groceries (or similar ones) for about 10% of what she had been prepared to spend.   I've been spending an average of $300/month for years - and that buys everything - groceries, cleaning supplies, toiletries, my clothing. ... read more

The Stockpile

  • by JenM

In my last article there where lots of questions about my stockpile.  Without further ado, let me take you on a tour! (Sorry for the poor quality photos, all the editing in the world couldn't save these! It's dark when I leave and come home!)     -------------   The Main Pantry Stockpile       This is the front of my main pantry.  The bottom shelf is pasta, popcorn, bottles (vinegar, oil, etc) and a catch-all for everything else.  This is real life! LOL!  On the second shelf is all my staples which I buy in bulk from the Amish store.  The third... read more

If You Love To Eat Out

I love eating out.  I text my husband during the day, just dreaming of chimichangas and queso.  If you love to eat out, but your wallet doesn't appreciate it so much, try these tips!   Share.  You learned this in kindergarten.  Ordering a slightly larger meal and sharing with your spouse is cheaper than ordering two seperate meals.  If each meal is $10 and you share, you can order one $15 meal and save $5.  Do this once a week and save $260 a year! Share.  Your kids will learn this in kindergarten, too.  Children's meals at sit-down restaurants are usually... read more

Using Foursquare to Save

  • by Kim

Have you discovered the Foursquare app on your smartphone yet?  I have used it to save quite a bit.  In fact, last night my husband and I saved $10 with it - which covers my phone bill for the entire month!     Install the Foursquare app on your phone (it's free).   Use it to "check in" at various retail stores, restaurants, or other places of business.   In some cases, there will be money-saving specials available to those who check in.  For example, the one below saved us $5 off our total bill when we paid with our synced American Express card.  Other... read more

When Two Incomes Become One: Changes we have made for the better!

We are one of those families that went from two incomes to one income – not by choice – and of course, it was the higher income (mine) that was lost.   We switched our youngest from full time preschool to part-time and I fill up our days together with playdates, library time, and running errands.  For about a second I feel bad that she doesn’t do music classes or gym classes, but we make the most of our time together and what she does get is attention and love from Mommy.   We refinanced our mortgage, I switched to a cheaper gym, we don’t turn the heat... read more
