Tips for shopping at Goodwill

Does anyone have some tips to share for shopping at Goodwill?


-Check and see if your store has a quarter day where whatever color they pick is only a quarter that day. There was one fall season I got all my oldest's clothes that way. If you get there early you can find the best deals because it gets picked over fast.

-Check and see if your store has a buy one get 2 free day for a certain color they pick. I am in need of jeans so I went this morning (yep, first thing) and headed straight for the jean racks. I paid $5.38 for a pair of brandnew looking jeans, and then I got a pair for Z Chavarichi (spelling) jeans and a shirt for my oldest for free.

-Keep the receipt. As long as it's not a discount color day you can return items if they don't fit.

Go fairly often as they get to items daily and put them out.

Think outside the box. Glasses make perfect candle holders. Odd plates can be bought and then you can put homemade cookies on them and give plate and all of gifts.

Our goodwill has one sat a month that everything is half price.

Our Goodwill is the only one in a fairly largish area, so everything gets shopped over pretty quickly. It's best to look on the the new racks (the ones they roll out and use to hang clothes on while they sort everything onto the correct display racks) for what you might want before it gets picked over. Dd is plus-sized and I found several Jones New York Sport velour tops in like new condition for her last time we were there. Everything I found for her was on the new rack. There is usually nothing in her size on the regular plus-sized rack.

-Go often. I try to go at least 2x a week. At ours, Target delivers a truck load of new stuff every day. It is all squished packages or overstock. I got one of those Biscuit fur real friends for $50, new in box. I sold it on ebay for $139. It was in perfect condition. I would ask your goodwill if they get trucks from walmart or target. There is not even a Target in my area and they still come and deliver to my goodwill, so it's worth asking about.

-I also agree that you should go early. I always check the carts full of stuff waiting to be put up. I have found great stuff that way.

-Use the return policy. I do it all the time. Some people think that that is a little weird, but sometimes I get home and an item is missing a piece, not working properly or doesn't fit me the way I thought it did in the dressing room. They don't mind!

I didn't know Target and Walmart deliver to goodwill!

We cannot return Items at ours!!
Wednesday is 1/2 off day, and ours has a card you get stamped everytime you spend 10$ you get 10$ off the 11th time time.

I do not like goodwill in out area, WAY overpriced. Now the one in Wichita, I loved it, they always had great bargains, like dollar day.

I see Target items at Goodwill all the time. 

 

  • Pay attention to the color of the tags, which correspond with their discount days (check which color tags are on sale when you walk in).  For example, one week all yellow tag items may be on sale.
  • Try on before you buy.  You may not be able to return the items, and even if you can - their return period is often very short (I think this varies by store).
  • Bring a list of what you're looking for so you don't get distracted.
