MOMS group questions

For those of you that are involved in MOMS....or MOPS...or what ever you call your group.....

What are your meetings like?
Do you get together outside of the meetings?
Do activities?
No kids or kids in the meeting?
Have speakers, crafts, activities, etc...at meetings?

Our MOMS group in dying and they are trying to figure out what is going wrong. We need ideas to help our group with a little CPR!

Any suggestions or ideas that your MOMS group has that you think is awesome?

i can only speak for MOMs club stuff.

yes our meetings are with kids! we find a family friendly place (like a family resource center, the library) where the kids can play supervised (one of the moms volunteering) and the other moms do the meeting.

i can write a ton about all the stuff - did your group just form or something?

No, it's new...it's just failing miserably.

Some backround...
A few years back we had almost 100 members. Last year I did not belong to the group because I was working during the meeting time. This year I am able to go, so I joined again. I was shocked to see the membership had dropped to less than 50 and only 10 or 15 actually come to the meetings! We hold them at a large church, have childcare rooms for the kids and hire childcare workers, so no kids are supposed to be in the meetings.

The leaders are trying to find out how other MOMS groups work so we can try to figure out what ours is lacking in. We are on the edge of folding.

What is your meeting structure like? Do you have speakers? Does it seem like a few people do all the work or is it shared responsibilit? Do you have food?....just tell me about your experience when you go to an average meeting.

Thanks!!!

I organize a moms group at my church, it is more a play group than anything else. This is what it is like:

It is for children ages birth-five (or not in school yet)
We meet for an hour or an hour and half
We do it in the church playroom which has all age level toys
Snack is on a rotation, we normally have something simple and geared toward the kids
Occasionally we do a treat for the moms, iced coffees or pizza
We normally just hang out, let the kids play and talk. We do not have any subject of the day or anything.
Mostly moms with non mobile babies sit on the floor on a big blanket so the babies can play, the other moms just hang out.
It is so layed back that is why I like it!! No pressure!!

I hope your mom group gets its life back!! I know mine is a necessity for my sanity!

Our MOMs group is not a play group. It is a group of moms that get together and have time away from the kids and spend 2 hours for themselves.

I went to one meeting. It turned out to be a gripe session for mothers to complain about their lives and gossip about others while the kids played. Not my cup of tea so I never went back.

I am part of the leadership team for the MOPS group at my church. We have about 40 moms.

Our meetings are once a month in the evenings so kids don't come. We do have limited childcare for moms who have to bring their kids though.

We typically have a speaker, food, time for discussion questions, and most of the time, a craft during the monthly meetings.

We were trying to do one additional morning and evening out activity per month but recently cancelled the evening out activities due to lack of participation. We are still doing the morning out activities but have had mixed success. We learned fairly quickly that most moms won't come to an activity in the morning where they have to pay for childcare. Our most popular activities are usually playdates in the church gym, or seasonal activities like a trip to the pumpkin patch...anything where the kids can come and have fun.

Honestly, we've had our ups and downs and are still searching for answers ourselves as to how to increase participation in the group.
