flavoring rice

Thread Starter
at the store yesterday I was looking at the flavored rices - and I wondered to myself - what can I use at home to make a good flavored rice, so I can stop buying these expensive already made ones?

how do you flavor your rice for a good side dish?

I see no reason to flavor rice - I like it just the way it is! But I do make rice pilaf.

I put butter in the pan, add some fine egg noodles & pine nuts, saute them just until they start to turn brown. Add chicken broth & rice. Bring to a boil, then cover and simmer.

I cook mine with tumeric then at the end toss in some frozen peas and carrots.

Just add spices. I always change my rice to whatever my mood suits or what I have on hand. Turmeric is one of my favorites. Cilantro and lime or lemon is another favorite.

I've made it with orange zest Great for thai food, things with nuts, stirfry.

Try using stock or broth instead of water. Also, I use jasmin rice and I always saute my rice in olive oil and butter for a couple minutes before adding the water or broth.

I make all kinds of rice pilafs, mexican rices, and I have even made broccoli cheese rice. My suggestion would be to get some recipes from all recipes.

Instead of water, I use chicken broth or beef broth.

I also like to take cook rice and mix with a can of cream of mushroom or chicken soup. Cream of celery is good too!

Or cook it with coconut milk. It is great with chicken, etc.

We also just like plain rice...

I do make homemade rice pilaf, wild rice, brown rice etc I find all those box mixes very salty...not flavorful, but salty. But thats me. You can definately cook white rice in broth or stock to add more flavor. My kids like white rice tossed with butter and fresh herbs. You can saute some onions and use those too.
