Tell me the truth. . . land line phone question - Page 2

We have a land line out of security - the power goes out here frequently because of storms (and our City Dept. of Electricity is SLOW). A lot of times our cells won't work during bad storms. So we keep a corded phone in our computer room as well as a cordless for everyday use. We had gone without a long time ago, but all it took was one baddie storm and I was a complete nervous wreck. We listen to NOAA, but our parents also call if they see anything on the radar that looks bad (my mom has done storm tracking courses) because they have TV and we don't.

What do you mean by this? If you don't have a landline you don't have 911 service either do you?

I have had to call 911 on my cel before and it was not a problem so that doesn't freak me out so much.

We got rid of our landline about two years ago and have no regrets. We live in an urban center so we always have reception. We have never gone over our minutes, we did try and get a really cheap landline connection from Qwest, it was $7.99, our security company told us about it and you have to ask for it because they won't offer it to you. We asked and they said just $7.99 a month and someone will be out to install. Got the first bill a month later for $78, I guess you have to pay for the installation which I think is a joke. If you want me to be your customer you pay for the installation. We canceled after that.

As long as your cell phone is charged, you can always call 911. You don't even have to be current on your bill. That is why you hear of so many charities collecting phones for women who have been abused etc. so they can call 911. I don't even think you need to have to have a plan, just a cell phone that is charged.

We didn't completely eliminate our land line, just the long distance on the land line. It's only ~$11/month here that way with our Cox bundle. We use our cells for long distance, and the land line for incoming calls/local calls. We've been very happy with that arrangement.

Now that I think of it....our land line is really my business phone, and my cell is personal. I needed 2 numbers anyway, so it made sense to keep it.

Check with your local phone company, but with ours you have 911 service. We checked with our local provider before we did this. It's the only number you can dial successfully, but it's a free emergency service.

Anyone else have experience/knowledge of this?

not any.
the newspaper was the only one that'd call me!
Everyone else just called my cell and I text a storm, so no. No regrets!!

We also have a third cell phone just for the house. I rather pay one bill instead of two bills for the same thing.

We havent had a land line for years - never missed it. Ive had to call 911 with my cell and it was pretty much the same service as if I called it from the land line - there was a 2 second extra step where I had to tell the operator what county I was in, then give my address to the 911 operator.
