I must admit I find this attitude confusing. Maybe it's because I'm a communications major and had grammar drilled into me as a kid, but I was taught that how you communicate is a reflection of you, of your education, of your upbringing. Other peoples' perceptions of you are influenced by how well you can communicate - both verbally and in writing.
If our kids were turning in a paper to school filled with misspelled words, improper capitalizations, bad grammar, etc., we would not tell them "if your teacher doesn't like it, they can just not read it." Same with memos I write for work, meeting minutes and reports. If you don't want people to read it, don't write it. If you want people to read it - make it readable.
