Worst Justifications for Spending Money You've Ever Heard

Have you ever justified spending to yourself, your spouse, or had someone tell you you should buy something because ___________ that was simply a ridiculous reason? What was the worst jusification you've ever heard?

One of my favorite (or least favorite) justificiations is because "I deserve it." Really, who is to say I deserve that pair of leather boots or designer handbag more than anyone else? I may deserve it, but the real question is can I afford it.

What are some of the worst justifications you've heard?

Well, if you can't afford something, any justification would sound ridiculous. If you could afford it, then there would be no need for an explanation.

"It was on sale." My dad used this one once when I was a kid and he came home from the grocery store with a 50-pound sack of Gravy Train. We didn't own a dog.

In truth, though, he did have a good reason for buying it. Our next door neighbor had a German Shepherd, and had been recently widowed. The dog really liked my dad, and he played with her often over the fence. He had noticed that the last few days, there had been a few table scraps in her bowl, but no dog food. So when he went to the grocery store, he bought a sack of dog food, and a sack of non-perishable staples and left them under the neighbor's carport when she wasn't home.

Even if you can afford something, some justifications sound ridiculous, don't they? Other ones include "life is too short" or "it was a great deal."

Or, some statments about what people can or can't afford outwardly seem a little contradictory, such as the stressed-out family who takes a vacation to escape their stresses - one of which is huge debt. As if more debt will help them relax. It just doesn't make sense, but it's what they tell themselves to help justify the expense.

Anyway, just wondering if anyone has any stories about some weird justifications they've heard.

I am always justifying purchases for myself no reason just something I can't seem to stop myself from doing....I will NEVER again justify using a cc though unless it was a dire need for my family or house etc.

What about a family buying an expensive house because "We needed the space." I've heard that one before.

Oh yah, we needed the space is a good one! LOL

My husband desprately wants a bike. But not just any bike mind you, one from Dick's sporting Goods that was 'on sale' for about $475. And he was GOING to buy it. Until I put my foot down and said, "Let me finish worrying about the bills first, then we can think about buying bikes". No big secret here about needing bikes, ect, but just the fact that he has NO time to ride a bike since he never gets home from work till after 9 at night, AND only has Sundays' off, I just didn't see the point of buying an almost $500 bike to maybe ride 1 day a week. Heck, go to Benny's and get a $100 bike!!

Another one with my husband, he enjoys being in bands, ect. He is a singer. But he doesn't own a PA. (I have no clue what it is, some piece of equiptment to work his mike, or something) AGain, he came home with a brochure for one that was again, 'on sale' for about $500. Is he for real???? When I gave him 'the look', he started acting like a teenager with the excuse "I'm the ONLY singer that doesn't have thier own PA. We can't start our band without me getting my own PA...Blah blah blah" Needless to say, we sTILL Don't have a new bike OR a PA.

IMO if someone can afford something they want, they don't have to justify their purchase to me. If I can afford something I want, I'm not going to justify it to anyone else. If I'm trying to justify it, that means something is wrong, so hopefully I can step back and figure that out before I do buy something.
