Worst Justifications for Spending Money You've Ever Heard - Page 2

A funny justification I heard in college, though it doesn't go completely along these lines.

I had a friend that often bounced checks. He told me, "I'm very serious about my money. When I pay for something with a check (this was pre-debit card days), odds are I'm going to bounce that check. So I have to decide if it is important enough for me to pay the $20.00 service charge for everything I buy."

He paid for our drinks that night with a check. I like to think it was my company that he was risking the extra $20.00 for!

I hate when people say they "deserve it" or they've "earned it". Not that we don't earn or deserve some things, but if you can't afford it, you really can't have earned it.

My grandma used to say "I don't drink, smoke or gamble, so I deserve this _____"

just wierd!

My EX husband used to buy stuff like crazy because other people his age had these things, therefore he deserved it.

I agree with the "on sale" excuse. I hate it when people say, "They were practically giving it away." If you don't need it, I would not take it for free! Then it is just clutter.

My mil is very bad about the on sale and giving it away excuse. For example, when I was 8.5 months pregnant with my second child, she gave me a premie outfit for a baby under 6 pounds. My first baby was 8 pounds 3 ounces and they were expecting the second to be bigger (he was 8 pounds 7 ounces at birth). I told her thank you, but that he would probably not be able to wear it as he was larger than six pounds then. Her reason for buying it was that it was on sale and she got it for a quarter and he might be able to wear it once. Well, great, but you wasted a quarter. Plus, it was butt ugly and not even worth the quarter she paid!

If you can't afford the note when you buy it, then you can't afford it, no matter how much space you need. When my daughter was little, I had an efficiency apartment with the crib in one corner of the living/bedroom and my bed in the other. We needed more space, but that apaprtment was all I could afford, so we made do until I could afford something bigger.

Was he aware that he also needed to decide if he wanted it badly enough to risk arrest? Passing worthless checks is a crime, after all.

"It's an investment"

A friend who likes expensive jewelry uses this excuse a lot.

I use the great deal excuse a lot myself! LOL but it is stuff I need or want, not just junk.

My dh used the, "I work my butt off and make all the money so I deserve it" excuse when he came home with a car that was double what we wanted to pay. Don't get me started on that one.

We have a customer who every month has to pay a $35 late fee on her home loan. But every time she comes in she either has on a new outfit or a new piece of jewlery, or a coach purse.

And she always says "I wouldn't have to pay this late fee, if I hadn't bought (items), but I bought it because I am worth it!!!
