What are some tips on using coupons? (for those that are new to couponing =)

The past couple years at mommysavers, I have learned alot about coupons that I didn't know. I guess you could call them, "tricks of the trade." So what are some tips that you may have picked up when it comes to couponing, that can help others save more money!

Here is my first one, and the most important one that I use:

Coupons tend to be put out by season, which also tend to correspond with the grocery store sales.

Ex: during the holidays, you will find coupons in your Sunday inserts for things like flour, sugar, brownie mix, and other baking supplies. Whereas, in the summer, you can find more coupons for barbq sauce and other kind of condiments to go along with the summer season.

So what I do is buy all that think I will use in a year. I mean we use barbq sauce all year round, so why wait until winter to buy the sauce, when it's on sale and there are coupons in the summer. It goes for anything your family uses. This past winter, I bought enough baking supplies that I shouldn't need to buy anymore until oct or nov.

So, plan ahead when using coupons, if you find a good deal, plus you have extra coupons, think about whether or not you will need those products in a few months!

For me the paper that comes out on the first Sunday of the month has more coupons that any other. I had 3 coupon inserts that were all packed in yesterday's paper. Next week there will be at most 2 and they will be about half the size they were this week.

Oh also, another trick I learned, is to sign up for newletters from EVERYTHING. I like to shop at Old Navy, Children's Place, New York and Company, etc. So I get emails and coupons from them all the time!

Recently I got a Victoria Secret Coupon that was for $10 off ANY purchase. So I found some body spray for $10, got it for free..and it became my cousin's b-day present! She loved it!

So go to the company websites, look for their mailing list! You can save money by printing coupons for restaurants and everything!

Good tips, thanks for posting! Another idea that is obvious, but must be stated, is to join a coupon train here on MS. Its a great way to share coupons with others, and to have other people on the lookout for you! Or you can always start a coupon trade with your own friends. Works great when you can only print a computer once from your computer, you can have someone else print it from their's!

There are a lot of great blogs out there that do the coupon match-ups for you. They will describe the best deal for the week/month and what coupons to use with them. I use these to plan my trips to my favorite stores.

Something I never would have thought to do in my early couponing days is to make multiple transactions. Just today, I bought two items (using coupons, of course) for $2 and earned a $3 catalina, which I promptly applied to my next transaction.

Another thing I've learned is that it's much cheaper to get things like shampoo, toothpaste, shower gel, deodorant, etc. at a drug store using their rebate program than at the grocery store.

And my biggest tip: never leave home without your coupons. You never know when you'll need to stop at the store unexpectedly. Similarly, take all your coupons with you to the store. You might find a discontinued/clearanced style or flavor and you can use a coupon for it. Also, if an item you really needed right now is out of stock, you're likely to find a coupon for a similar item or brand in your stash.

Search manufacturer's websites for your favorite products. Many of them will have coupons listed on their site for you to print.

- Trade your Sunday coupon inserts. I cut what I want out of mine and then given them to my mother. She gives me her Sunday inserts after she's cut out what she wants. There are still coupons for $ off just one item so it helps a lot - especially w/drugstore deals.

- Keep an eye out for stores that double coupons - Wegmans and Tops in my area, KMart too sometimes.

- Also watch out for coupons that expire at the end of the month. Even if the item isn't already on sale in the sales flyer it might still be a good deal.
