DIY Summer Camp Idea: Water Play

The 4th summer camp idea to entertain kids is water play.

-Give them a bowl of water and a paintbrush. Let them paint the sidewalk or driveway.

-Give them a bigger brush and let them paint the house with water.

-Play in the rain. The neighborhood kids enjoyed playing in the rain earlier this week.

-Which freezes faster experiment : tap water vs salt water?

-Will it float or sink experiment: line up different items on the table. Have your child guess if the item will float or sink and carry out the experiment. Items you can use feathers, paper clips, grapes, crayon, nail, etc.

-Disappearing water experiment. After a rain draw a line around a puddle. Go out and recheck the spot later in the day and see what happened. Teach them about evaporation.

-Get out the sprinkler and let them run through.

-Sprinkler red light green light: Have kids run around the sprinkler playing the game red light green light. When it's a red light they have to freeze and get wet.

-In a small wading pool or a bucket have child try and pick up ice cubes with their toes.

Feel free to add any things you can do with your kids with a water theme.

-Neighborhood water balloon fight (I found water balloons at Dollar Tree).

-Toss a water balloon back and forth.

-Items to play with in a wading pool (turkey baster, sponges, margarine tubs)

-Make a watering can by poking holes in the bottom of a clean and empty gallon milk jug. Fill it up outside and let kids hold it by the handle and water will come ot the bottom.

Centrifugal force experiment: Fill a bucket 1/4 full iwth water. With a swift action swing it up and over your head in full circle over and over again. Water is held in the buckt by centrifual force.

-Cotton ball experiment: Pour alittle vegetable oil into a glass jar. Add 1 cotton ball turning till coated. Put this cotton ball and a plain one into another glass of water.Predict which one will sink and which one will float.

-Density experiment: In a glass jar pour in some corn syrup. Add same amount of vegetable oil and then same amount of water. Liquids separate into layers with densest at bottom and least dense at the top.

-Trick your hands experiment: Get out 3 bowls. Fill one with ice water, one with warm water (not so hot that it burns ) and one with room temperature water. Put one hand in hot water and other in cold water. After a minute put them both in the room tempature water bowl. What do you feel? The hand that was in the hot water will feel cold and vice versa even though they are in the same bowl.

-Water balloon stomp: Tie a filled water balloon around child's ankle. The object of the game is to stomp on and break other's balloons but to keep your balloon intact.

-Water balloon yo yo: Cut a rubber band in half. Tie a loop securely on one end of the rubber band. It should be big enough to fit around your finger. Fill balloon 1/4 full with water. Blow air into the balloon till it's the size of a tennis ball. Tie shut. Securely tie rubber band around know on the balloon. Place rubber band around middle finger and gently throw balloon toward the ground. When it springs back ty and grab it.

Water relay: divide into 2 teams. Race water from one bucke to another. Person or team that spills the least wins.

We used to play water balloon volleyball, with pairs of teammates holding a towel to catch and throw the water balloon.

Sometimes I let Maggie stand on a chair at the bathroom or kitchen sink with the water running a tiny bit. She just plays and splashes and pretends to wash her hands. It's a great way to occupy her while I'm getting dinner ready. Maybe I should have her washing dishes.

For smaller kids, drop food coloring into ice cube trays to create colorful blocks of ice. Let them play with them in their wading pools or in the tub until they melt. This tip is from The Complete Book of Baby Bargains
