How do you limit souvenir spending on vacation? - Page 2

We actually give the kids their spending money and tell them when it's gone, it's gone. We've done that since they were 3 or 4 yo and it works like a charm. They are much thriftier and much more careful about what they spend their money on.

We usually get an ornament and a magnet from each vacation. We'll let the kids each pick something too. It is part of the fun! I am going to Disney and am stopping into the Disney store each week and picking up little sale items. I think these will keep my 3 year old happy. My six year old will need a spending limit each day. I am thinking he'll get a certain amount and when it's gone it's gone..that will be for his "snacks" and souvenirs.

We aren't into souvenirs but I let the girls get something. I let them pick out a stuffed animal at the zoo and amusement park. We recently went to the beach and they got a "beachy" necklace and hair pony. We also collected a bucket of shells.

If we're going somewhere really cool like Banff, Alberta, Canada, we might get a hat or t-shirt.

we do not buy souveniers. we do not go into the places that sell them.

No...not really. We don't like junky plastic stuff though, so that's really a non-issue. If the kids want something, I let them get it. We're more into maybe a watercolor by a local artist or maybe the kids want a t-shirt to sleep in, and I'm fine with all that stuff.

We stay away from souvenirs most of the time. We do get patches and put them on their book bags.

We collect magnets from the places we've been. We have them displayed on the service door that leads to our garage:

A couple of years ago I came up with a plan to deal with this with my two daughters. I bought them each a bucket hat (like the kind an explorer might wear) and then I told them that each place we go, they could get a pin and put it on the hat. The pins at national parks and most tourist locations cost between $2 and $4. Even if I buy them 3 or 4 pins on a trip it still costs me under $20 per kids. Plus, now they have their hats starting to fill up with pins and they get really excited about adding a new pin each time we take a trip. They love to look at the pins and think about the trips we've taken.

That's a fun idea! Most National Parks have junior ranger programs where they can earn a free pin or patch. My three year old has collected a few of those.

We bought the kids new hats this trip - a Junior Ranger one for the baby (it's impossible for him to take off ) and a Disney on for the 3 year old, but not glaringly Disney.

Our kids are still too young to ask for stuff, but one thing I did was bring Disney toys, all their Disney clothes etc so it'd feel like we already have it all.

for small day or weekend trips they usually get something small they don't usually pick out to expensive of stuff.

bigger trips like when we went to Disney if we don't think its a place we will repeat or repeat often we let them pick out what they want. we also get t-shirts for everyone and an ornament if we can find them.
