This article surprised me. This woman who has health insurance still had to pay $22,000 in medical costs to give birth.

Being denied health insurance coverage for maternity care.

What were your out of pocket expenses for your most recent child?

Year of Birth:

Delivered in hospital: (Yes or No .. or home, car, taxi or otherwise )

Medical Coverage: (Yes or No)

Out of pocket costs for labor, delivery & hospital stay:

Any extenuating circumstances: (c-section, premie, complications)

All four were born at the hospital...

#1 - 2002, went into labor on my own, 3 hours from the time I got there until I delivered, I stayed for 48 hours. Had insurance through DH's work. Total OOP approx $6500.

#2 - 2003, induced at hospital, 3 hours from induction to birth, NO DOCTOR present, DH delivered her, stayed for 48 hours. Again, insurance through DH's work. Total OOP approx $7100.

#3 - 2006, went into labor, had emergency cs, stayed nearly 5 days. Had insurance through my job...Total OOP $520. (Yep - $520! Had great insurance there!)

#4 - 2008, planned cs, stayed 3 days. Insurance through DH's job again. Total OOP $5050.

What were your out of pocket expenses for your most recent child? zero

Year of Birth: 2003

Delivered in hospital: (Yes or No .. or home, car, taxi or otherwise ) hospital

Medical Coverage: (Yes or No) yes at the time we had BCBS and Medical assistance.

Out of pocket costs for labor, delivery & hospital stay: zero

Any extenuating circumstances: (c-section, premie, complications) High risk, lots of extra check ups, ultrasounds, etc, but all in all not too bad.

Now my 6th child ended up costing us about $5,000 out of pocket. We had BCBS only and there were many complications. A few weeks before he was born I spent a week in the hospital hooked up to everything possible to keep him from coming early. I went home with a home monitor, visiting nurse and a pump in my leg, pumping continuous drugs into me.

Ds:
2006
hospital birth (I had pre-e, induction, epidural, 3 day stay, circ)
Kaiser Group Plan (from my previous work)
$250 total cost (also had $5 prenatal visits, no copay for ultrasound or lab work)

This baby:
due 1/2010
hospital birth
Kaiser Group Plan (from dh's work)
hospital stay including all interventions, etc is $200/day, so it should be about $600 total cost if all goes well (no copay for prenatal visits, $10 for ultrasounds and lab work)

Well, she had insurance but not maternity care, which is a choice. I don't think maternity care should be required as part of your coverage, unless you want it, because it greatly increases the cost of the insurance. There are so many people, including men, women in a same sex partnership, woman who are no longer interested or able to have a child, etc that don't need that care and they shouldn't be required to pay for it. I hate all these things the states are REQUIRING insurance companies to include, for everyone, because it increases the cost of care with no benefit to the recipient.

Out of pocket for our first was 150.00 and the Second child was 0 because we had medicaid on top of our private insurance which we had with the first also. Good thing we had medicaid I just had to leave my job and he had a stay in the nicu. Years 2005 and 2008, Private health insurance
