Who watches your pet(s) when you're out of town?

Traditionally, my mom has always watched our pets and I would watch her's. Our old dog Zoe would go stay with my mom and then she would come in and feed the cats, usually every other day, sometimes daily, depending on when she was in town. But our new dog, Moose, he's young and a bit high energy (needy) and I don't think my mother completely trusts him ... which is funny as Moose will come when you call him and Zoe never did. But Mom is getting older and I guess I'll just accept that she hasn't completely warmed to our new dog.

Anyway, I think Moose, next time we're out of town, that Moose will go to the kennel and then Mom will come into town and take care of the cats.

What do you do with your pet?

My parents live about 15 minutes away, and they come fill up food bowls and clean the litter box.
We have a pet door in the laundry room so the animals can let themselves in and out (although we have it locked while M'ija's big dog is staying with us, as he is too big for it and tries to come through it anyway).
Our next door neighbors also keep an eye on things, but the wife is afraid of M'ija's dog.

I have 4 cats (as you can see). My mom used to watch them, but she is gone now, and when we took her to Poland we realized we had to have someone else come in. We have been using the same catsitter since 1996. She is around 60 now. She comes in & feeds them, waters them, brings in my mail/paper. She will water indoor plants and even outside plants in pots if I ask her to. She feeds the fish. She keeps a little daily diary. She calls us if there is a problem w/ a cat or the house. She has tried to medicate but my cats are very hard to medicate, so she does not do that. We even tried hiring a vet tech to come to the house to pill the cats while we were gone & she was not successful either! So they are med-free while we're gone.
She used to be $9/day but now it's $15/day, which is a bargain compared to boarding 4 cats.

We have 2 cats. Sometimes if we're going to be away for the weekend we will set out big bowls of food and water and enough litter to get them by while we're gone. If we go away for a week or two we will take them with us or drop them off at a relatives house. My family is basically all cats or none. No dogs in the family.

We use a kennel. When my older sister lived nearby, she would live at our house and take care of our pets when we traveled. She doesn't live near us anymore and our cat just is very needy, and would be really lonely/unhappy with someone stopping in just a few times a day, so she goes to a great kennel. When our dog was a live, he went there too.

Both of our families live about 1 1/2 - 2 hrs away. We almost always take them to one of their houses. Every once in a while, we will have someone come to housesit for us.

That is one reason we never go anywhere. 4 dogs are way to expensive to kennel and I have no family nearby.

If it is convenient to their schedule, MIL has watched them for us. Last year, we took our older dog to VT with us. She was the best passenger in the vehicle.

I found a great gal to watch our dogs. She is a Vet Tech where I take my dogs so that is where I met her. I take the dogs to her house and she watches them. She takes them to work with her so they can be outside a lot (weather permitting). If they need any shots, etc while they are in her care she will take care of it. My dogs absolutely LOVE her. She is very good to them. She will take them on walks, gives them treats, etc. I am very lucky to have found her. I would be sad to have to take them to a kennel and not a loving home. She charges $25 per day total for two dogs. Not sure if that is a great price but for what I get in return, it is totally worth it.

Buddy does sleep-overs with his aunt Sarah (my sister) when we go out of town. He loves sleeping and playing with his cousin Abbie (my sisters lab)
