Homemade cleaners

I know that they seem to be really popular on this site, but to they really work? I tried a tip to clean my oven using baking soda and water. NEVER AGAIN. It took forever to finally clean all the paste out of the oven and the darn thing was still dirty after.

Was I using the wrong natural cleaner for the job? Can someone please tell me which cleaner recipes you use for specific jobs?

For those of you like me who can't seem to let go of store bought cleaners, I discovered something a few weeks ago. The cost of a bottle of all purpose spray is around 3-5 dollars. The concentrated all purpose cleaners that come in bottles with screw on caps are the same price. I was reading the instructions on the back for using it diluted when it dawned on me that it's the exact same thing in the spray bottles but it's just more concentrated.

I had just finished my spray bottle of lemon scented lysol. I measured out the proper ratio of lemon lysol concentrate to water and refilled the spray cleaner bottle. It works exactly the same and a 4 dollar bottle of concentrate will last me over a year if I continue to do this. Also I am confident that I won't cause any nasty chemical reactions because both bottles were for lemon lysol.

I too have tried the homemade oven cleaner and it was a mess. I do think however that most homemade cleaners are better for the environment and cheaper. I have starting playing with other peoples recipes to find what works for me. I save tons!!! on laundry soap by making my own. I also use vinegar to clean with a lot. The only time I use germ type killers are when someone is really sick. Then my doctor suggest using something stronger. In those cases I still try to buy a greener version. My son has asthma and he does much better now that I changed to green cleaners.

I do homemade laundry detergent. And, I really do that to save $--not because I think it's overly fabulous But, I am content with it enough that I am making some more after church today. I also use some vinegar on occasion, but not consistently.

I make my own laundry detergent. I can't say that it gts the clothes any cleaner, but they are clean and I save tons of money. I have tried the dishwasher detergent. I only use it if I run out of the store brand. It leaves a film on my dishes. I do use vinegar instead of Jet Dry though and it works great. I make my own multipurpose cleaner that works great also. It is a combination of rubbing alcohol, ammonia, a drop of dish detergent, a drop of lemon juice and water. the alcohol kills the germsand the ammonia and dish detergent, and lemon juice cleans. The lemon juice also gives it a citrus smell.

i make my own shaving cream out of shampoo, conditioner, hand cream and baby oil. It saves me tons and works great. You just don't get that foam like you do with store bought but leaves your skin so much smoother.

I also make my own frebreeze with good smelling fabric softener. It really isn't homemade just used for a different purpose. I take about of 1/2 cup of fabric softener and add it to a spray bottle and fill the rest of the bottle with water. it works just as well as frebreeze and is so much cheaper.

I also use a lot of vinegar just for general cleaning. Borax powders gets used in place of comet and toliet bowl cleaner.

I haven't tried the homemade oven cleaner though, I have a self cleaning oven and after cleaning the oven and letting cool off I usually just have to wipe it down.
