What do you do to fight frugal fatigue?

Thread Starter

Sometimes it gets tiresome to always be pinching every penny; watching every nickel and dime. When frugal fatigue sets in; what do you do to fight it? Do you have any strategies that energize you and get you on board with saving money once again?

For me, "repurposing" what I already have helps.  I look for "new" outfits in my closet, try new recipes with the food already in my pantry, try DIY activities with the supplies I already have.

I like to keep a yearly running total of my savings...I always like to beat the year before... I like to save all my receipts in a drawer...and when I feel I am losing steam or it is not worth it I get the receipts out and add them up and put that on my yearly total sheet...you aren't impacted by a few dollars at the time but when you see such a big total you really get energized...every penny counts!

We look at how much longer we have to pay off the family car and the 2nd mortgage. Once those two are paid off (in 2-3 years) we dream about what we will do with the extra money in our pockets.

I just try to remember the goals we have set and if we don't keep being frugal we're not going to reach it

I go and get a sonic drink. It's my way of rewarding myself for doing a good job by saving money. But I usually go at happy hour when they are half priced!

I make a game out of grocery shopping on a budget. See how much I can get for less, how mauch coupon savings and try to under do it every week. It is the one area I have control over spending

Looking at how much money I've saved - either my coupon savings, or looking at our savings accounts - makes me want to keep saving!

I start saving up for a trip back home to visit my family. Every time I cut some expenses, that's just that much more I will have when I go on my trip. The trip itself is a HUGE reward, mentally AND emotionally

I set a goal in the beginning of the year, like a yearly budget. I like to look it this way, saving and being frugal are both ways to have a better life, so when frugal fatigue sets in once in a while, I'd pamper and spluge myself for taking one day or one week off. Not that I go spend whatever, but relax and not to worry about being in the "saving war".

I go buy a pop at the gas station (using a refill cup of course)! Then I head off to continue my clearance shopping at Target.....that's my idea of fun.
