What $20 Buys at Aldi - Page 2

I've never shopped at the Aldi's in my area...I may have to go check it out though. $.29 for avocados is great (we eat ALOT of them)! They are usually $.99 at my WalMart and Dillons/Kroger.

That is fantastic. A lot of times, I spend $20 just in the produce aisle.

I know this sounds silly, but I don't shop at Aldi's because we shopped there when I was a kid, when we had no money and I always hated that my mom bought the off-brand stuff...like always. Like I wanted little debbie oatmeal pies....but we bought the off-brand ones at Aldi's. I really should get over it!

So I want to ask, have you researched their brands?! Like their meat especially...what do we know about it? I trust brands like Perdue to be fresh and not have hormones and crap it in, but how do you all feel about their brands there? I mean when I get the ad in the mail, they look ok enough. But how do they compare to the named brands? I'm even talkinga about baking stuff, cereals, etc as well. However, I do tend to worry the most about meat, eggs, and dairy. What are we really getting when we buy it?

If you know the answer to those questions or know where I can research it, please let me know!

As with everything we buy, the labels should always be checked, especially the country of origin and then make an informed choice. I am new to Aldi and the only bad thing is some of their products are seasonal and when they are gone, you have to wait until next year. I learned that the hard way, their non-stick spray with flour for baking is the best I have ever used and is available only at Christmas time. Next year I will stock up.

We save a lot on cereal, milk, yogurt there. I like their produce, but have to watch at our location. You can't go in relying on it. I've gotten AWESOME stuff there, but sometimes you can tell its been sitting there a little too long. Good breads and frozen stuff, as well as canned goods too. I always come away with more than I'd planned.

I can only go to Aldi's occasionally because of how far it is from my house. I have not bought any meats there but everything else that I have gotten there has been great. My kids LOVED the pot stickers. I hope that they have them again when I go there next week. Last time I was there I got a pineapple, carrots, potatoes, bananas, clementines and apples. All of the produce was excellent quality and so much cheaper than my usual grocery store. I still have to go to the regular grocery store to buy my deli meats and some things that my family is particular about (like certain rolls and name brand sodas) but it sure does cut down on my grocery bill when I can get to Aldi's.

I have never had a problem with any of Aldi's produce. The only problem I see, is if you like organic. I don't think I have seen organic produce there. I do check where the produce was grown. I try to only get produce that was grown close by, unless I really need something for a recipe. I live in Michigan so I will chose Canadian food over Mexican food, or food grown in California or Florida.

Aldi has started to stock some organic foods at my store, just not produce yet.

I buy Aldi's produce every week. This week pineapples were on sale for $1.78 and they were larger than the ones in our regular grocery store. I've bought strawberries, bananas, oranges, mushrooms, lettuce, tomatoes (until home-grown are available) potatoes, sweet potatoes, blueberries, grapes, cabbage, celery, onions, garlic, zucchini, grapefruit, broccoli, cauliflower, carrots, avocados and more at Aldi's. Sometimes they are a little smaller, but sometimes they are not. The strawberries often come from the same farm as the ones sold in the main grocery store. The only thing I can't buy there is cukes. My husband doesn't like them for some reason. I have to get them at the market or regular grocery store.

Here are some recent photos of ALDI products for June 2012.  I'm still excited about getting Brie logs for just $.99!  (More in our ALDI Photo Gallery)

I started shopping at Aldi's for the produce, milk, and egg prices.  I have branched out to most items.  I have tried lots and loved most.  My kids love the french toast sticks, and I love the price.  I buy all oils, flour, sugar, soy sauce, pickles,...you get the idea.  The string cheese is great too.  Love it there! It is worth the 15 minute drive.
