Do you compost? and 'how'? - Page 2

I started mine with two rubbermaid bins and drilled holes in them. We don't have many leftovers or food scrapes so I opted for a smaller version until I need a bigger bin. It is working so far but I may add worms to help speed up the breakdown process!

My neighbor has been making compost in our back yard for years.  Our yard just happened to have a perfect spot between our garage and his yard, so DH let him use the space, and it's such a small space behind our fence that we could never really use anyway.  Now that I started to garden and am using the compost I have started to contribute to it too.  What we do is just throw new material over the fence on one side and my neighbor flips and rotates it.  So you do not need a fancy bin, just need to have a closed in space to do it.

Years ago my Fathers father used to do his own gardening, and had three very good composts going. ( he had a really huge green thumb).

His neigbour one day saw him attending to the compost heap and he explaind to him how it works and why he does it. So the neigbour started one as well, except that he was putting all the kitchen scraps into it - including meat and fish left overs - and could not understand why his stunk so bad.

dh made a barrel with a stand.  You can crank the barrel around to rotate it.  He empties it out and distributes the soil in the back of our yard.  We have over an acre and no one behind us.

I saw a demo during a garden tour and the lady used a regular-sized rubbermaid clear bin, drilled holes for air and she also had worms in hers.  She said she ordered them online. She also used torn up newspaper to help get it started, too, with the food scraps.
