Opinions please!!!

I would love some opinions. Here is my two part thought process reguarding trick or treaters this year.

Last year, DS went trick or treating for the first time. I'd never gone before, and I know you're supposed to "inspect" the candy, but I was surprised that DH tossed all the lollipops, something I usually get at least 50% of to give out, so that young kids can have something they won't choke on. I thought...do other parents throw those out too, just in case?

That lead to... year before last, we had 45 trick or treaters, and started running low on candy. The next year, we had 6. And I had so much candy. So much candy. I don't really want that much in the house ever again.

So, I can on an idea, for aprox 18 cents a piece, I can get 5x7 78 page coloring and activity books that look really nice, and hand those out. If we don't get many kids, no candy to add to the waistline, they can just be set aside for next year. Was thinking I could tape a piece of candy to each, and have one bag of candy for if we get teenagers.

What do you think? Do you toss your kids lollipops and stuff too? Usually I get half Wonka mix (nerds, etc) and half dum dums or tootsie pops. Would your kids be just as happy getting an activity book since they'd be getting candy elsewhere?

I feel like since we don't know many of our neighboors, I'd be thrilled if my little guy got a coloring/activity book instead of candy. But I wonder what you all think.

The only candy I ever tossed from M'ija's trick or treat bag was stuff that the wrapper had come loose on.
The fear of people poisoning trick or treat candy is much more widespread than the actual incidence of it.

I think the idea of handing out coloring pages is fine, with or without candy attached to them. And I really wouldn't worry about having something special for teenagers - that's a bit old to be trick or treating anyway.

I have never thrown out the lollipops. To be honest, my kids hate getting things other than candy.

I think it's a great idea.My boys like getting things other than candy.

I've never thrown any of their candy out...and I think that whole 'candy is poisoned or has pins in it' is really mostly urban myth. JMO

I've never thought about lollipops being a joking hazard. *shrug* I guess, for me, my kids weren't huge candy eaters, so over the years, they've picked out what they wanted from their TOT bags, and we've donated the rest. I never picked stuff out and threw it out because I was afraid of choking. You can't anticipate though what folks will do with your candy once you give it - I'm sure some will throw it out, as I'm sure some will throw out your coloring book - kwim? It's one of those things, you just can't please everyone. If you think it's a good idea, then go for it!

I agree that most kids prefer candy over 'non candy' items. My kids don't even like a lot of candies but they do like to get candy when TOT, even though we end up donating most of it.

I guess I have to wonder, if you don't like your kids getting candy...why let them TOT? That's traditionally what it's all about...

We live in an area that either has tons of kids or almost none with no logic as to why. The year we got tons and tons it was super cold. We buy a couple bags of candy that we like and several rolls of nickels. Once the candy is out we give out the $. Sometimes we will give small carnival toys if we find them cheap, We may give out silly bands this year if it is still popular and I can find a big lot on ebay cheap enough.

I've never thrown out the lollipops. Never really thought of it.
I like the idea of activity books, my kids would like them. I would probably put them in my purse for when we were at a restaurant or something.
I would probably get 1 bag of candy for the older kids. But, my trick or treat policy has always been-if you make the effort to dress up, come to my door, and say "trick or treat" you deserve to get candy - no matter how old you are! I love Halloween, it's so fun!

Don't get me wrong - I would never turn anyone away, no matter what their age. If you make the effort, I'm going to reward you with candy. But I give candy and only candy, and there's no such thing as too old for a candy bar.
I buy chocolate, and I buy the kinds of chocolate we like, since we will be eating any leftovers - Snickers, Kit Kat, Twix, Whoppers, Heath, Reese's, Baby Ruth, Almond Joy. Trick or treat candy is one thing that I don't cheap out on.
One of the reasons I don't give out toys and such is that there is no way to keep it age appropriate for the wide age span of kids in our neighborhood. Plus, the kids in my neighborhood know that there is good candy at my house. I have a reputation to maintain.

I don't give out candy. I always give out those Halloween bags of pretzels that come in the large jar at costco/sams. They are $6 for that huge tub of them, I buy three. I send one tub into each child's classroom for snacks and keep one for trick or treaters. I also get the big bag of fun size playdough and give that out to the little ones. Are you talking about those activity books from oriental trading? If so I love those, I gave them out in goodie bags to the kids classes last year and will be doing it again this year since I have a ton left over.

To answer your question, yes I end up tossing most of the candy that they get from TOT, or dh eats it. They just get so much. They are allowed to pick out their favorites and eat a few pieces a day for the first week or so, then I make it disappear. LOL I love any neighbor that gives things other than candy!

Sams Club is such a good idea!! I forgot they do have huge boxes of chips, cookies and pretzels...I might do that, because leftovers would actually be eaten!!

And yes, was thinking about oriental trading. But when I went back to the site today, the coloring books were gone!! So will keep an eye out on those, or go to Sams, because that is a great idea! Something other than candy, but still a food thing.
