Has anyone else tried this? There are lots of crazy juice flavors here I want to try this with, but the Indian gelatin scares me a little.

I am a dental hygienist, and nope, these are NOT ANY BETTER than traditional gummy snacks.  They probably have less additives and are less expensive, but not any better for your teeth.  The key in the decay process is acids.  Juice has lots of acids, and sugar.  The bacteria in you or your child's mouth turns the sugars into acid.  The acid in food or the sugar turned to acid is what creates cavities.  So the acids and sugars in the juice, combined with the gummy texture (sticks to teeth longer) makes this a problem food, too.

just wondering...can you use Stevia sweetened flavored water instead of juice...that way you can make it as strong...or weak...as you want...hmmm gonna hafta try this...

Wonderful idea!

After treats like this, rinse out to remove the acid. biggrin.gif This helps to protect young teeth. A sip of water is better than nothing!

But don't ever try to use fresh Pineapple juice with gelatine! It never sets! Something to do with the proteoletic enzymes(?)- that won't allow the gelatine to behave like gelatine! Pineapple needs to be cooked to set!

(As a pineapple farmer's wife- years ago I tried to do the healthy right thing for hubby as a treat! Just won't work!) hissyfit.gif

Since you said that you didn't add water I need to ask how big are your envelopes of gelatin? because using your ratio with my gelatin I found it is a paste and not pourable at all.

It's 3 of the little envelopes that come in a box. The unflavored Knox gelatin. I think it's .25 oz in each envelope.

If you're trying to make it with Jell-O gelatin, try this recipe:

1 3 oz box flavored gelatin

2 envelopes unflavored gelatin

1/3 c. water

Sprinkle the gelatin over the water in a small saucepan. Let sit 5-10 minutes. Heat over medium heat and stir until dissolved, 2-5 minutes. Pour into your molds (I used a plastic measuring cup with a spout) and let cool for 20 minutes. Pop out and eat!

I updated this post with a new recipe that uses fruit juice concentrate.  I've made several different kinds and these taste SO much better than the original batch I made of plain apple juice.  We also made a batch using lemonade concentrate that was really yummy, if you just want the homemade fruit snack experience and not the 100% juice.  If anyone else tries these, please comment and let us know how it went!

You can dust them with corn starch and it will help with any stickiness that might occurr to little fingers.

I was just at the IKEA website and searched ice molds and only popsicle molds were found.  Are they no longer available online?

I really like this idea for healthier fruit snacks and thought this would be great for our upcoming family vacation.

I see them on the IKEA website under "ice cube tray."  Are you in the US?  http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/60138113/
