Weighted grades in middle school?

If you have a middle schooler or older kid, when did they start receiving weighted grades?

I was taking a 2nd look at my dd's progress report and realized that one of her averages didn't look right (every grade a child receives in each class is listed on the report). I emailed the teacher and she emailed me back saying that her grades were weighted and that a parent could never figure out the true average just by looking at the progress report. Interestingly, none of the other 6th grade teachers have weighted grades.

Does it sound too early to be doing this? I never got weighted grades until high school.

I'm not sure what the point of weighting grades in middle school would be They weight them in high school because those go on college transcripts and they don't want kids who take advanced classes penalized or do want them rewarded depending on how you look at it. But middle school grades are never looked at so what's the point?

My kids started getting weighted grades when they went to 7 class periods in the 6th grade.

Thank you for bringing this up! I saw a spot on our online grading system the other day that had "weighted" sections and I was like WTH is that? Those areas were left blank. We are only in elementary school.

Wow, that's early!

Both the public and private schools around here only give weighted grades in high school for both Honors and AP classes.
