How long does candy last??

I got some candy on sale a few days after Halloween. M&Ms, Skittles, Mike n Ike's and Hot Tamales... I was planning on putting them in our stockings and such at Christmas time, but DH asked if the candy would still be good by then...? Will it?

I think it will be fine.... I would think candy would be good for at least 6 months if not longer!

It should have an expiration date on it.

Oh sure...candy has a very long shelf life. The items you are describing are definately not going to 'go bad' before Dec 25th. Maybe by NEXT Dec (2011) you'd might want to rethink handing it out in stockings since it might be hardened a bit, but still edible!

They will all be fine for the Christmas stockings, I do that every year. Long term it depends on the candy and what temp you keep it stored at and the moisture level in your home. I keep mine in airtight containers in a cool dry place. I still had a bag of peanutbutter M&Ms from last yr's halloween sales last month and they taste just as fresh as the bag I just bought. Receese PB Cups I give about 6 months, if not eaten by then I bake them into cupcakes, mix into homemade blizzards, or chop up and bake into crescent rolls . Hard candy about a year, but if they are not eaten in a timely manner I smash them and use as sprinkles on frosted baked goods. If I buy shaped chocolates I melt them down after the holiday to make chocolate toppings for baked goods and icecream, or even turn them into fudge. On year I even melted and made 1 large block and made shavings of it for decorative topping on a cake.

I love all these ideas... I always stash Halloween candy away for Christmas stockings. I also teach a 6th grade class at my church, and I pass out the candy all year. Always tastes good to them!
