Technique of the Week Tips-Embossing

I sadly know very little about embossing. I usually buy paper pre-embossed.

What are your tips and techniques for embossing? Do you use a special tool? Has anyone tried those embossing plates? What about embossing powder, do you use it? How do you emboss on the cheap?

I have a tool kit that I can emboss shapes onto paper using a metal ball tipped tool. Its nice but a friend has a emboss plate kit that does the same thing way faster. When I do stamps I emboss with powder and heating tool which is nice to give texture to stamps. I do this especially when I am going to color in some, it helps to keep me in the lines.

When using the powder and heat tool on your stamps make sure you don't use a quick dry ink. Pigment ink works best for me. I bought a cheap $2 powder tray that has a funnel end to put the powder back in the container. It's cheap but it will save so much time and mess. To make lines look really sharp I use matching ink and powder (i.e. blue powder on blue ink stamp) that way if there is an area missed or the powder doesn't stick it still looks pretty even. Clear powder on color ink is good for this too.

If you have a cuttlebug go with the embossing plates. I want to get a cuttlebug just for this since mine takes way too long to do my embossing.
