Swishina suggested this fun experiment to do with the kids to see if sunscreen really works. It was so easy and fun for us. It also opened up a whole discussion on the sun, UV rays and anything else they could think to ask

The supplies: Black construction paper and suntan lotion

spread the lotion on HALF the paper (we used a sponge brush to try and make it even)

But using our fingers was WAY more fun!
Now it's time for the Sun to do it's part of the experiment:

I put the paper on a chair in the sun because it kept blowing off the table

A few hours into it, you can really see the difference (and that we did use A LOT of lotion
)

5 hours later, you can see a slight difference in the color (left was lotion covered) once it all dried it was a dark grey to light grey difference in the sides.
We also tried a picture for fun. In the center of the paper is our sunscreen star-burst:

Give it a try on a sunny day with your kids!
