Double Charged on Credit Card

I just got my credit card statement and I noticed I was charged twice for a catering order I placed for my DD's graduation last month. I placed the order online and they took my credit card information. Then when I picked the order up, they swiped my card again. I didn't think twice about it until the statement came in.

So I called the caterer and they are telling me it will take some days to locate the receipts since it was so long ago (less than a month).

I always check my credit card and bank statements because of this. This is one lesson my dds don't seem to get because they don't balance their check book (they really don't have credit cards yet--I pay them off since they are school related). They don't understand that a mistake can be made that may ultimately lose them money.

Hopefully, I'll get a credit this month. If not, I will put in a dispute with my credit card company.

Has anything similar happend to you?

Good for you for catching it.

That has happened to me, though probably not to the sum that you just dealt with, several times. In fact, recently, Dominoes Pizza did a number on us that was a huge hassle to clean up.

I would call the credit card company anyway even if you don't want to do a formal written dispute. I had this happen with my grocery store once (never did find out why I was charged twice) and the credit card company was great - they said that they would mark that transaction so that even if the credit didn't appear on my statement that month I wouldn't pay any interest or anything on it.

I thought about this too, but I haven't done it yet. I thought I would give the merchant a chance to correct it first. However, I just may call to cover myself. Thanks.

You have to write your credit card company to do a dispute. I would. If you wait too long to dispute then you lose your chance to do anything about it. I'd get on the caterer. They shouldn't have to look through their receipts. The transactions should be listed in their books already. Heck, they should be willing to look at your credit card statements to see that you got double-billed.

They did ask me for this. They are in a different city and I just scanned and emailed it to them along with my receipt from them the day of the order (they told me they already found where I was charged online). I am going to wait until Friday. If I haven't seen a credit on my charge, I'm going to write my credit card company and dispute it.
