Does turning your Water Heater off save money?

Someone mentioned this on Facebook - turn your water heater off when you're not home.

Do you think that actually saves money?

In India, we have a water heater for each bathroom, and they turn on with a light switch. We just leave them on (and our electric bill doesn't seem the worse for it) but people say "just turn it on 15 minutes before you shower, and you have hot water".

A gas water heater should be left on since gasses can build up and become an explosion hazard. I heard that something like that can happen inside an electric water heater (since it doesn't vent like a gas one does), but I know other people who have their electric water heater on a timer without a problem.

So, a timer on an electric water heater MIGHT save money. After all, you're not using your water heater when you sleep at night so there is no reason to cycle it on and off. However, when it comes to the household appliances that cost a lot of money, I think the refrigerator tops the list and no one is suggesting shutting that off while on vacation.

It might save a very small amount, but I can't imagine doing that.

Actually, we turn down our water heater (gas) in the spring and summer. I put a permanent marker mark for the fall/spring levels, and the summer levels, and then winter levels. I think it is so hot in summer that the air does most the work in summer (it's not like we just settle for lukewarm weather).

I have got a lot of weird reactions to this, but we actually notice a very LARGE difference in our gas bill. To the point that we only pay $15/month, year-round. We may have cut our entire bill almost in half with this strategy. Our heater is very efficient to begin with...
