Washing clothing when you travel?

Do you ever do this?

I always went with the idea, "I'm on vacation and I'm not going to wash clothing." But this past week, while we were traveling, my DS was sick and soiled some of his clothing. In this case, I HAD to wash his clothing and I figured, while I was at it, I might as well wash some of the rest of our clothing.

Turned out the washing machine was on the way to the pool and we could play around in the pool while we waited for it to wash and dry. It worked perfectly. We had clean clothing for the rest of our trip and, once I got home, it worked out that I didn't have like a billion things to wash. It also made it so I wouldn't have to bring as much, something that I totally am a big fan of.

Anyway, we're heading out for an extended trip in December and I'm thinking then, we will just wash our clothing.

From a frugal standpoint when you're traveling by air, doing laundry is a lot cheaper than paying extra to check luggage. We have done it a lot, especially when visiting my parents in Florida.

I do this all the time. In Asia, hotels don't have DIY washing machines, so you have to pay several dollars per item to have it laundered. Not only that, but we've taken some long trips, and didn't have enough clothes to bring even if we wanted to.

Now, I pack very light and include a small tupperware of laundry soap and I handwash items in the bathroom sink. My last trip was only two days, so I didn't bring the soap, and of course BOTH of my kids threw up all over their clothes. Maggie wore her raincoat instead of a shirt, and I learned a lesson.

When we travel for a wk we usually stay in a house or condo and we do sometimes wash laundry, especially if we're going to the beach and have wet or sandy towels. I have very, very rarely done it when staying in a hotel. I'm a big believer in minimum packing so we sometimes need to do laundry while there.

For anything longer than a weekend, I think it is definitely worth it to do laundry.

That is another thing I always pack, laundry and dish detergent.

No, But then I overpack anyway!

For me, it depends where I am going and how long I will be gone. If I am visiting family, I absolutely throw in a load of laundry before I leave. If I'm in a hotel where the machines are pricey, then I wait until I get home. We did a 2 week road trip across the country last year and I definitely did laundry on that one. Those Tide single-serve packets they sell in Target are fantastic for that purpose!

Detergent samples are also great to save for travel.

I am not opposed to doing laundry on vacation, but we all generally can pack enough that I don't need to.  We don't fly--but travel by car.  When I visit family, I usually will throw a load in since it is very convenient.
