Frugal Follies: What was your latest attempt to save money that didn't work out?

Big or small, we all make money-saving mistakes. What was your latest attempt to save money that didn't quite work out the way you'd planned?

Last weekend, I had picked up some marshmallows so we could roast s'mores. Well, I opted to get the Stacker Mallows because they were half price at Target. They didn't puff up and in my brother's words, "These are dumb marshmallows." I guess I ruined his s'more making experience, which was not worth it to save the money.

I bought an ice cream scoop on clearance at the grocery store for $.25. I currently don't have one and either A) bend the normal spoons trying to scoop it out (no worries, I just bend it back) or B) leave it on the counter to thaw a bit (and forget about it and have a soupy mess). I thought this scoop would be great to add my miscellaneous drawer of utensils. I went to scoop out the ice cream and it shattered into beautiful rainbow colored shards of plastic. Apparantly there is such a thing as 'too cheap'.

Making pancakes from a mix. Only 2 out of 5 come out good. I think I have the fry pan too hot. Next time, I will buy frozen.

And I suppose it ruined your ice cream too What a bummer!

Refined sugar is over $1/lb here. I've seen a "store brand" at one certain store that was much less, but I haven't been able to find it. Then I found something called "bura sugar" at that same store, and it was half as much as the kind I usually buy, so I tried it. It tastes weird but I'm still using it!

I just tossed some Pic Sweet frozen endame with sea salt. Not. Edible. It was on sale and I had a coupon, but whatever I wound up paying was too much.

Here's another one... my last Walgreens transaction resulted in Register Rewards I forgot about and never used. They expire after a couple weeks, so I was out of luck.

I have so many of these, I named my blog for them.  :-)

One of my latest was buying eight bottles of Kern's nectar at Publix.  With the sale and coupons, they were 30¢ each!

But only one of my kids wants to drink them... and she's more of a milk drinker.  So now I have seven bottles sitting in my pantry, taking up space.  And I still have to buy juice for the other two.

Oh, well!

Surveys.  Most just waste my time and have no payoff!

Making my own cleaners.  Personally I just buy what's on sale or the best deal and try not to use too much.  I tried making my own laundry detergent - what an awful waste of time for me!  It was awful!  Also dishwasher detergent - another true dud for me.

Shopping some things at the $$ Tree.  Many times you can score, but other times you can find much better merchandise at Walmart for less.  A lot of their stuff truly is junk and breaks shortly after you buy it.  Better to shop a sale or spend a little more and have something last.

Budget haircuts!  Never again!  I only use a true salon now with a stylist I trust.  I think you Can get lucky with a budget hair place but this has not been my experience at all, And if I do get lucky with one they are never there the next time I go and then I'm taking a chance again.

Cheap food - not inexpensive.  I mean Cheap as in bad for you ingredients.  (i.e. cheap hot dogs).  Everyone here will know I'm trying to save money and the quality is truly awful.  Not worth it!

Call them and tell them.  I did once when I bought a bag and something was wrong with it (can't remember what the vegetable was or what was wrong with it), and they sent me coupons for free vegetables.  I didn't have to replace what I bought either, so say I bought "bad" peas I didn't have to use the coupon on just peas.  They were really good about it and I actually talked to a human.  Green beans are usually pretty much a good bet as far as quality.
