Pain killer for strep throat

Has anyone ever heard of narcotic pain killer being prescribed for strep throat? Ionly ask because DH's sister, who has a long past with drugs, went to the ER last night with what she suspected was strep and was given pain killer. I have never heard this practice before.

No never.  Everytime I have strep, I get the abx and feel better within hours. I've never needed a painkiller other than advil or something. And usually thats just to bring my fever down because taking a pill when you have strep is a form of torture.

I've only had strep once, so I don't have a lot of experience with this.  I remember I was given antibiotics and told to take an OTC pain reliever.  Maybe doctors prescribe narcotic pain relievers for severe cases.

She's a recovering addict and has had a tough year. Hopefully this is just a bad case of strep but I do wonder if she isn't relapsing. None of her kids are living with her now days. She split up with her boyfriend, though he appears to still be supporting her, somewhat. And she has started frequenting the bars again.

I asked my niece who is a nurse, and she said that she hasn't heard of this. But then again, I am sure each dr and hosptial is different.

With six kids, an ex husband, and myself, we have strep a LOT through the years.  When one gets it, it just travels!!!  We have never had a pain killer UNTIL this past fall. Riley, my 11 year old, was given a liquid medicine that was a combo of several things, including a pain killer.  It helped TREMENDOUSLY for that first 24 hours before the meds kicked in.  I would LOVE to have had it long before now!

I have had strep many, many times and like Missy said, once you receive the antibiotics, you usually feel better within a few hours--at least by the next day.  I have never had pain killers prescribed for it.  I can understand your concern.

I don't know what she said or didn't. If she is actively using again, no she wouldn't have told him. Of course, one look at her teeth and surely he/she could tell that use is an addict or at least was.
