Paula Deen - diabetes and ethics

Thread Starter

Paula Deen: promotes high fat foods/ has had diabetes for years but didn't reveal it/ signs a deal to endorse diabetes drug. Ethical?

I thought this was interesting. I have never understood her appeal, with obesity the way it is, and the way she cooks. Now we find she has had diabetes for years, but she continued to promote her southern style cooking. Now she gets w/ a drug manufacturer and partners with them, to make money endorsing diabetes drugs. So, is she contributing to worsening the health of the nation and making money all along the way?

Let the videos play - there are like 5 different videos in a row on the subject.

Just thought this might make an interesting discussion.

She doesn't force people to eat her food. If I make one of her recipes once in a while, it's not going to make me obese if the majority of my diet is healthy. If someone is obese, it's their own fault.

I saw something about it and that she didn't consider it a big deal, I didn't really read it. But I also did not realize that she had signed on to endorse a drug company ... wow. Honestly though, you really cannot turn to a celebrity for your idea of what is right and wrong. I am beginning to think very few of them have any ethics when it comes to padding their pocket book.

Glad I never followed her cook show.

I agree she doesn't force people to eat her food, but that is REALLY shady I think

How is it shady? I think the endorsement part is lame, but I think that about all celebrity endorsements. She's out to make a buck and she's just found another way to do it. Again, you don't need to take a certain drug just because Paula Deen endorses it. People need to take responsibility for their own health and make smart choices that are right for them.

Seems like a good business move.

Promote your fatty cooking and then your diabetic medication company.

Hey maybe she could sell a cookbook with a coupon to send in for medication.

I agree.  It just proves that you really can't trust any celebrity endorsement. They are just out to make a buck.

You know when you make her meals that you are eating more fat than you should. She doesn't put a gun to your head and say make this and eat it. It's none of my business about her health issues, and she shouldn't have to report them to me.

I don't really have a problem with it.  She is known for her buttery, high-fat foods.  Who know if that is related to her diabetes diagnosis. Should she have disclosed that before?  I don't really think she had an obligation to do so.  People and their diets is their own business, her health her own business.  If the drug really worked for her (as the article claims) I don't have a problem with her endorsing it.  It's worse when a celebrity represents a brand they don't use.

I don't think that is right to judge ANYONE even a public figure such as Paula Deen. First she doesn't make people eat her food. It's by their choice. This world has been educated on what her type of food can do to you. People that are obese cannot put the blame on Paula Deen, Fast foods places or anything or anyone else. They made the choice to eat the bad things. My family enjoy some junk foods, who doesn't? However we do it sparingley and excersise on a regular basis. The other day my husband and I were walking through an antique store and it dawned on me it's not just peoples unhealthy eating habits that have made them obese. THe technology the world has these days has taken the normal household chore and has turned it in to something you can do without breaking a sweat. Take mowing the lawn for example we now have riding lawn mowers, kitchen mixers, self cleaning products. We use to burn calories by just doing our normal day to day chores and now we have machines that do them for us. The point I make is that people aren't obese because of how someone cooks, or that we put a toy in a happy meal. It's because they choose to be obese by consistently having bad eating habits and poor excersise routines.
