Did they take lessons or did you teach them?

Hubby & I taught them between the pool and ocean. DS isn't as strong a swimmer as DD yet, but he'll get there smile.gif

They take lessons once a week at the Y.  They've been in swim lessons at the rec center since they were three years old.  We are thinking about asking about the swim team for our oldest.

Yes, my oldest had lessons for a long time. My youngest had lessons but hated them big disaster spending money too. In the mean time I relaxed he relaxed we still went to the pool and we taught him! I wouldn't throw him in a lake alone but for a pool he is good!!

Swimming lessons were the one extra-curricular activity I insisted on for M'ija. I tired to teach her myself, but it didn't work, so I enrolled her at the Y. Unlike dancing, tumbling, or playing abll, I consider swimming an necessary survival skill, and we lived near a river, and she loved to fish, so I wanted to make sure that she could at least keep herself afloat if she fell in, even if she didn't enjoy swimming. Turns out, once she learned to put her face in the water, she loved swimming.

both had lessons.

DD got to level 7 in red cross.

DS just cannot relax enough in water to float! they suggested after two rounds of lessons for him that he would not be able to learn until he could relax( he is afraid of the water).

All of mine know how and were taught by dh and I.  Each year we go through the steps again, just to make sure, before we allow them in the deep end.  All but the littlest one are fish.  She is a good swimmer, but she chooses to keep her head above the water most of the time and not go diving to the bottom for games, etc.

PS...while I taught my kids, I did so in the shallow end.  I can swim...and can float...but I am NOT a strong swimmer at all.  I would never want to be the only adult in charge of a group of kids at a time swimming.  I'd be petrified!

Mine all learned at the Y.  We didn't have any place near us to swim, but when I visited my sister once every summer, I made sure that they were in there practicing their skills.  I agree that this is something that they need to survive.  My MIL does not know how to swim and will only put her toes in the ocean when they are their on vacation.

Both of mine had lessons. DD had them at the Y when we lived where there was no pool, but then we moved into a neighborhood with a pool and they gave lessons, so both kids took there. They were also tested by the pool lifeguards before they could pass into swimming in the deep water at our pool. DS also did some with boy scouts because he had to be able to pass some test out in the lake there.

I wouldn't say either of my kids are good swimmers as far as pretty strokes or perfect turns, etc. But they both do know how to swim well enough to not drown and be comfortable in deep water.
