I didn't say the MIL should chose her dress first, I said it was traditional for both mothers to wear the same length dress.

Thanks. I really needed these insights.  I was looking at long dresses and I know if I chose one, I would have felt strange while all the guests were wearing short dresses.  I think even if I do choose a knee length dress, the MIL can choose tea length.  I seriously do not think she would wear a short one.

And Calimari, I didn't think about body make-up.  I am going to look into that.

My mom wore a long straight skirt in one color of my wedding colors, and my mil wore a knee length dress in the other color of my wedding colors.  Pictures are gorgeous simply because of the coloring all matching.  I don't think any of us thought about the length of dresses coming into it.

(BTW...I wore dark dressy jeans and a black lacy top to my daughter's wedding!!!  LOL  NEVER did I imagine such a thing, but she got married by a justice of the peace at the courthouse.)

I highly doubt DD will allow that for me!  Although, that is what I would prefer to wear!  smile.gif

My MIL wore a nice black pant suit I helped her pick out. She was not comfortable in a dress or skirt. I bought her a really pretty brooch and she looked great. My mother worse an ankle length skirt and a sparkly top. Each one was dressed in what made them most comfortable. It made them both happy, which in the end made me happy. I am sure you DD will want you to feel comfortable and happy with what you are wearing.

I would not worry about what the future MIL is going to wear, but if you wish to talk to her ahead of time you can. She may have a picture of her outfit, or at least an idea of what she is looking for. Just remember it is about your DD, and what she wants is all that matters.

Very different styles.  They both wore that worked for them!

I think it all depends on how formal it is going to be.  If it is very formal, then I think floor length would be appropriate, if not very formal, then dress length (slightly below the knee  (or a suit) would be great.  I think more than the length I would consider a "toned down" color, like a soft pink (very flattering), seafoam green, black but very simple, navy can look very stunning.  Nothing bright or too flashy would be my first priorities.

I would say to go with the length that the bridal party is wearing.

Bridesmaids are wearing cocktail dresses--at the knee.  DD is wearing a traditional, long gown with a train.  I think I may just have to decide when I go shopping.  If anything looks good, I just may buy it.
