Getting Organized in the Kitchen

How much money are you wasting in the kitchen?  Chances are it's a lot!  Budget-busters like eating out, impulse purchases at the grocery store or simply spending too much by not buying on sale really add up.   Plus, if you're like us - you tend to eat better when you plan out your menus.  (Eating healthier is on my list of Top Ten Goals).

I've got lots of tips and tricks for getting organized to save in the kitchen.  Read them over -- hopefully some of them will work for you!  Today's assignment is to create a 2-week menu plan based on what you have in your pantry, what's on sale, and what fits into your budget.

Already done.

This was on my to-do list for tonight.  So it will be done by tomorrow.

This is something I have tried to do but have not been able to keep up. I hope I can keep it up this time!

I am doing so good at my menu plan this week! I did my shopping with a plan to only buy necessities, because my grocery spending seems high lately.  So I had to have a plan.

Blech! I hate this assignment but I really need it. I'll work on it this weekend. I still haven't been able to make myself do the menu planning thing. This is my huge problem area in my budget. I like the idea of a master list of meals. I'll start with that. Something about planning what we are going to eat so far in advance just really turns me off for some reason, but I know it will save us a ton of money if I can just embrace this concept.

I agree! I don't enjoy menu planning either.

However, I sat down this morning and planned out five meals and what I'd need to make them.  It took less than 1/2 hour, but I know it will save me much MORE time than that next week. I went to ALDI and now I'm set to go!  It was worth the effort.  Plus, give yourself permission to stray from your meal plan if you feel like it.  That is something that helps embrace it.  Most ingredients you buy will still be good when you do feel like making what was on the menu.  Also, do what works for you.  I really hate planning more than five meals at a time, so that's what I do.

What do you do with

6lbs of Ground turkey

3 packages of lunch meat

2 packages of hot dogs

1 lb ground sausage

1 kabosa

1 lb breakfast links

3 packsof peppers

strawberries, black berries

1 lb of walnuts

3 bags of ice

a package of salad shrimp

6 frozen lunches

5 lbs ground hamburger

2.5 lbs of hashbrowns

3lbs of butter

9lbs of chicken not counting the bag frozen to the bottom of my freezer

4 cod fillets

4 salmon fillets

6 things of homemade turkey soup

And 3oz of Breast milk

I guess I need to meal plan better. I had to throw away a whole trash can full of too old or freezer burned

And after

Oh I have a Deep freeze too. I moved the newer stuff out.  The extra's all out. Really need to do a defrost and clean out of the deep freeze. My fingers still ache from actually going through everything. But now it is at least organized. Time to plan out some meals.

Ok I took it as an excuse to Really go through my freezer.  I mean how cool is it to really cut back on your grocery bill just by not buying what you already have.

Done, I just wish we had more grocery stores around here instead of 2. I think the sales would be better then.
