Low-fat Ranch Dip w/Greek Yogurt

1 packet ranch seasoning

1 17-oz. container Greek yogurt (I got FAGE at ALDI for $3.29)

= YUMMY ranch dip that tastes like sour cream

I wonder if you could just use regular yogurt instead of the Greek yougurt?

Yes, you can. This used to be a weight watchers recipe to use as dip for veggies or on potatoes, and back then they used regular yogurt. I made it several times and thought it was edible and certainly healthier, but I didn't think it tasted as good as sour cream.

Greek yogurt is thicker and creamier than regular yogurt.  I don't think it would taste nearly as good with regular yogurt, but that's just me.

The problem is (if I remember correctly from a previous thread) Ruthie HATES greek yogurt.

You remember correctly, I HATE greek yogurt. My sister loves the stuff, my I just can't get use to it.

This recipe is different than just eating it plain.  It's highly seasoned, so you're using Greek yogurt mainly for the thickness and texture.  I had my dh try it and he didn't even realize it was yogurt and not sour cream!  I'd think with regular yogurt it would be too runny.  If you do try it with regular, strain the yogurt first.  I've done this before with a coffee filter and it works well.

Unfortunately, it's really defeating the purpose of eating healthy if you are using the ranch powder, because it contains MSG.  I try to not EVER give my family MSG laden foods, but unfortunately 99% of the ones at the store have it.  Try, Newman's Ranch.  There is no MSG in that one.  The greek yogurt, however, is always a wonderful alternative to sour cream in almost any dish that calls for sour cream.
