First I would start by saying I think buying clothing is easier at thrift stores when your kids are younger as they get older the boy selection for sure in slim to none. That said here are a few of my tips and add yours for those that don't shop there often or are thinking about it.

1. Check online for sales our goodwill's have 1/2 off certain colored tags on each day and they do run quarters days on clothes as well.

2. Check in often

3. My biggest tip would be find one located in a area where the houses cost more I find the best name brand stuff at ones located close to these.

Here is what I got on two recent trips. Obviously it's easier to find little girl stuff all are name brands addias, gap, childrens place, old navy and one ur It wich  a local department store sells. I got all these pieces for $1.19 a piece on the half price colored tag sales.

2 hoodies

9 pairs shorts

3 t-shirst one tank top

1 gap skirt

8 pairs of capris

So 24 pieces for under $30.00!!! Could not have gotten those name brand even on sale for that price.

Don't get discouraged when you can't find anything.  There are days when I can't find a thing and then there are days when I find a ton!

Make sure that you check it over carefully for stains or tears.

I honestly haven't found much lately at Goodwill's or thrift stores. I have found an awesome consignment store in my area. It only sells the name brand clothes at affordable prices. I even bought a couple of Longerburger baskets for under $30. And that is with the cloth liner and plastic protector.

I agree with this.

When my kids were little, I would expand my search to sizes that they wouldn't grow into for a year or even two.  If it was a great buy, I'd buy ahead and put it in plastic storage bins for future use.  Then when they did reach that size, I'd have a bunch of things already to choose from.

If your buying for yourself expecially, if you can try the articles your interested on.  I have found that I just love an item until I put it on me.   Then I hate it.   if you buy it first then your stuck with it or out of the money, if you never wear it.   So my TIP is TRY it on.

Check out ALL the thrift stores and consignment stores in your area at least once. Get an idea of which one has the best prices or the nicest stuff. My favorite is a consignment store that has prices that are right around what St Vincents charges(in my area) and the clothes are more up to date. Of course some of the stuff is priced higher, but in general it has great prices and I actually find clothes I like. In my area St Vincent has prices a bit too high for what they offer. Goodwill has better prices, but they stuff the clothes so tight together I don't even want to bother looking. And the Salvation Army has very good prices, but they are located in an area that is so easy for most people to get to in walking distance that they are always picked over. Plus they do .99 cent clothes every Saturday.

Go when you have time to look.

Listen to advice from other people in your area. If someone tells you of a good one that is farther away than you want to drive, see if you can set up a day to carpool.

I have actually been doing really well at thrift stores (mostly GoodWill because they offer military discount days and have really great brands) over the past few years. I only buy brand names like Gymboree and Gap (not because I'm a brand-snob), but because it has great resale value. I buy for my oldest daughter, hand it down to by younger daughter (they are only one year apart in sizes) and then I resell it on ebay for more than I paid for it. So, I buy cheap, get one or two childrens' use out of it and then make money reselling. With the money I make, I am able to buy for the next season. This is a great way to help "contribute", financially to the family, while being a SAHM. I think if I added up what I've spent on kid's clothes vs. what I've profited, I's say I come out MAKING MONEY to clothe my daughters.

I do a lot of online thrift shopping too. My favorite is www.plaidgoat.com. Great deals and the selection changes a lot!
