Cheap way to start seeds indoors by repurposing household items - Page 2

I don't know if I have a photo handy or not. We might make this weekend though if so I will take some step by steps.

It would be similar to what is listed here.

http://www.instructables.com/id/Self-watering-recycled-plant-pot-for-growing-herbs/?ALLSTEPS

(note the show all steps button by the photo strip for easier reading)

We use smaller bottles that fit in the window sill and use a coffee filter instead of newspaper and plastic. We have also found the coffee filters to hold the dirt in fine for the most part so do not need to drill holes in the cap.

So our version has a few less steps! It has always worked well for us.

I put together actual photos of how we do our "inverted bottle"  seed starting if anyone wants to see. I posted it here.

Thanks for the photos! I couldn't picture at all what you were saying before (hey, I'm a visual learner haha), but those look great.   I *just* recycled like 60 of those bottles too, darn it all

Very cool and easy!

You can also start seeds in empty yogurt containers.  At this point I don't know if it is still worth it or not to start my seeds indoors, wondering if now I just just plant the seeds when it is time to plant outside.

how does the rolls hold up to repeated watering?  We start all our garden seed about February and water (with a spray bottle) twice a day.  I can envision the paper rolls unwinding and falling apart, but I had to ask.  Thanks!  :D

Is anyone starting their seeds now?

We should if we are going to try celery again. But I won't do as many as last year. I think we decided to buy peppers and tomatoes instead of starting them from seed. I just don't like the way seed trays clutter my kitchen which is the only room with the light they need. We have a pretty mild climate I will be able to start some things outdoors in April.

They did start to unravel a little bit, but it wasn't too bad. I don't think I watered mine that often though, and I didn't use a spray bottle.
