It's different in person...

Have you ever seen something on the news, or in the paper and then when you see it in person it is a different experience (or is it the same as you thought it would be?).

I have seen pictures of tornado devastation and it breaks my heart. Well this weekend we had an EF-2 tornado come through our town. It was 7 miles from us. Hubby and I drove through the area Sat AM on our way out of town and Oh my goodness....I was at a loss for words- trees torn down, a car flipped over, the houses just torn up, and a few completely destroyed. frown.gif And the debris that was everywhere....in my head I expected it to look like on TV...and it did, but it felt worse b/c it was so close to home I think. Our friend lives in one of the developments right in the path and luckily his home has minor damage compared to others, but the experience is not one he will ever forget. And 3 of the 4 reported injuries ( we were very lucky compared to Indiana) were kids pulled from their beds in it- they are okay too, bless their little hearts.

Back in the 90's Califronia had some major flooding in the area where my dad's family lived. I saw the news and the pictures were bad but then I traveled down there, my father had rebuilt my uncle's house, and visited a trailer park that had been flooded. It was amazing ... entire trailers flipped over on their sides, mud up to the tops of other homes. I was moved.

What rock have I been under? I didn't hear anything about this. When did this occur? I do have to admit that I haven't seen or read any news in about a week. I hate this happened. I agree, it is so much worse when you see it in person.

It IS different.  For one, it is eery how quiet it all is after it happens.  When you see it on tv, you don't get that part.  There are no "normal" noises...noises of modern life.  I have lived through several hurricanes and gone through once where a tornado hit.  It most definitely hits you a lot harder when you see it in person.  I can't imagine what it is like to lose everything you own just in the blink of an eye.  frown.gif

It just makes it  more real and personal when it happens to you or near you.  I think we have been desensitized by the media and everything to us just seems like a fictiious movie.  We also had a tornado that ripped through our neighborhood--touched down on the streets next to us.  Seeing the devastation first hand and having people you know suffer from it is just so much harder, of course.
