Three years ago Todd Bol came up with an idea to remember his mother, a teacher who had loved books and encouraged people to read.  At his home in Hudson, Wisc., he built a box, made it waterproof and filled it with books.  It looked like a miniature one-room schoolhouse, with a sign underneath that said “Free Book Exchange.” Bol put it on a post outside of his house and invited neighbors to take a book, and return a book.

It's an awesome idea!  It's like having a tiny library in your own neighborhood.

I love it. I'd want a magazine exchange, though.

One of the independent toy stores in our old neighborhood did this. They had a cart full of used books (and ones from their store that didn't sell). They would put the cart out on Friday and Saturday but if you were in the store you could ask to see the cart. All they asked was that if you took a book, you left a book. DD would save up her old books and want to go to the store just to get new ones. The program was so popular, they ended up with TWO rolling carts of books and would have to remove some books and donate them to thrift stores because it became so overwhelming.
