Are you worried about all the Pinterest and copyright questions that have popped up?

Here are two articles I found pretty interesting.  All in all, I am keeping my account because I think it is a WONDERFUL idea to be able to have ONE place to go to like this and know that my recipes are under one heading, my kid activities are under another, my inspirational sayings under another, etc.  I LOVE Pinterest!

It will be interesting to see how it all pans out. I do see lots of copyright issues on it though. I know recently I saw something posted here on MS complete with a picture with a watermark, etc. with no credit given. I then saw the EXACT same recipe and exact same picture with the exact same watermark on a blog. I'm not sure who stole it from whom, but it's obvious they both weren't the original yet neither gave the other credit nor provided a link. I'm on some blog boards and there's lots of people unhappy with people stealing their original things and their pictures. That's why I'm so diligent to only pin from the original if I can instead of repinning. So I do think it will be interesting to watch.

Copyright law is very clear, give credit where credit is due. My Dh and I had a long talk about his, he is very much a copyright law junkie. We both agreed just cover yourself. Like my history professor says, "When in doubt site your source."

The problem with that is on Pinterest, you honestly may not have a clue who the original source IS.  Who YOU copied from may have copied from someone who may have copied from someone.....and THAT is the big worry!

That kind of thing should be reported.  Let me (or Shell) know if you ever see anything like that.  The only ones I've seen are Ellie Mae's, which are from her own blog so she owns the copyright.

And are also really good too, btw!

Yes, if you see something questionable, PLEASE let me know!

ETA: I never answered the question ,lol. No I'm not worried...well, maybe a little, but not enough to go back through all 4,000+ of my pins and check them. I try and post from the source as much as I can, but I fully admit there are times I log on, see something and 'pin' it to go back to it and actually LOOK at it later, I pin it then b/c I don't want to lose it (the pages move fast!)

To answer your question, no - I'm not worried.  Most social media sites have similar TOS where the liability rests with the user, not the site.  I think Pinterest is being made an example because it came on so strong in such a short time.

I personally like it when my pictures from Mommysavers get pinned and re-pinned because it brings us more traffic.  What I don't like?  I've also had lots of bloggers use my photos without permission (probably a lot more than I realize).  That often rubs me the wrong way, especially since the pins of my images lead back to their site, not Mommysavers - even if they do list us as their source.   Last year my Easter Peeps wreath photo got highly ripped off and I see it on many sites now.  I have considered watermarking more of my images but haven't gone that far yet. Maybe I should.

It will be interesting to see how it all works itself out, but I'm not deleting any of my pins because of it.

I don't think you can be held liable for posting a pic that you did not know came from a different source then the one you took it from. So long as credit goes to where your got it from and you are not claiming it as your own, you have covered yourself. I do not agree with other people using someone else's pictures and claiming it as there own. Truth is you don't know. If it is that big a worry only pin when you are certain of the source. This copyright stuff comes up every time there is a new social network. The main thing is not to claim something is yours when it isn't. If I pin something from a site, and that site is claiming it is there's and it isn't the original site will be the one in trouble. It would be no different if you posted something here on MS, gave credit to that site, then someone discovered that site used there stuff. The worst that would happen is you would be told you have to take it down. Plus when the site is pulled for copyright violation the picture or whatever would go away anyways.

I try very hard to pin from the original source. I should probably not re-pin from other boards, though, just to be safe.

Kim, I didn't realize the Peeps Easter wreath was original to this board. I made one last year and it was so much fun!

Glad you liked it!! Definitely, my ideas are meant to be shared. It is my original photos I get a little proprietary with. Only one other blog asked me for permission to use the photo (I always say yes) but soon I saw that image everywhere. It got picked up on Stumbleupon and tumblr and soon nobody knew where it originated from. Oh well, I'm not going to sue anyone over it. wink.gif
