How have you saved in the kitchen this week? - Page 2

This week, we didn't grocery shop at all. We are using everything we have before we go grocery shopping again this weekend. So far, we've done pretty darn well.

I made a meal plan and stuck to it for the first time ever this week, also.

I priced matched at Wal-mart!  I always assumed Wal-mart to have the lowest prices but sometimes with sales flyers you can really make out at the 'regular' grocery stores.  So I checked and instead of paying $8.14 for a large pack of boneless pork chops, I only paid $5.43!  Instead of buying a large package of chicken drumsticks (I skin them myself) for $5.98 I only paid $4.46.  For mangoes instead of paying .68 each I paid $1 for 2.

Then (my greatest deal today) I price matched hair colour...it was regular price $7.99 which is halfway decent to begin with.  I price matched it for $5.99 each and then I used a buy two and get $4 off!  In the end it worked out to $3.99 each instead of $7.99 each biggrin.gif  It was great, and now I'll have enough for several months, in time to collect more coupons and watch for more sales!

I also used a coupon for Wisk laundry detergent - I only use it once in awhile for really bad stains or a particularly 'bad' load, so instead of paying $5.37 for it I used a $2 off coupon and got it for $3.37!

I was not motivated to cook last night; had nothing planned; nothing I could pull out of the freezer in time for it to thaw. Called DH at work & told him we were going out or getting takeout. He sounded bad, had a really rough day at work. I felt bad because I could see he would be in no mood to go out. I then remembered I had to pick up a Rx at CVS. Stopped in at the grocer next door & they had some seasoned chicken breasts on sale. I remembered I had a butternut squash at home. I could pop the chicken on a baking sheet along w/ the squash.  I bought some fresh broccoli to steam. I had everything ready to cook in about 10 minutes & popped it in the oven when DH got home. He had time to hit the exercise bike, we had a tasty dinner, and then we went for a walk. He was very glad to have dinner at home.

The chicken and broccoli cost $5.

I buy most of my fruits and veggies from Bountiful Baskets. They are much cheaper and fresher. It is a co-op that buys in bulk and splits the cases up so everyone gets a nice variety. I don't get to chose what is in my basket but my family really enjoys most of what we get and if there is too much of something I will freeze it for later.

How well do the beans keep their texture? I have been wondering if freezing cooked pinto beans would cause them to turn to mush when thawed.

I just made 5 containers of homemade hummus and am going to freeze all but one.  It came out great!
