Sweetened condensed milk caramel recipe

When I first heard about this sweetened condensed milk caramel recipe (if it can even be called that) I couldn't believe it!  There is pretty much no work involved and it costs around $1.  All you need is a crock pot and a can of sweetened condensed milk:

Sweetened Condensed Milk and a Crockpot = Dulce de Leche

There are just a few easy steps:

1.  Take the label off the can of sweetened condensed milk

2. Put it in the center of the crock pot and fill it with water until the can is COMPLETELY submerged.

3. Set the crockpot on low heat for 8 hrs.

That's it! After the time is up, take it out and let it cool to room temperature.  Note: To get it to cool faster, you can stick the can in a bowl or sink of ice water.  After you open the can, it should look like this:

Dulce de Leche (Caramel Sauce)

It's so yummy and creamy and awesome with sliced apples!  It makes a great snack for a party or anytime really.  My kids also like the dulce de leche spread onto crackers or toast. You could also reheat it and use it to top ice cream or blend into a milk shake.

Make sure you store it in an air-tight container in the fridge

*Note: If you don't have enough time for the crock pot method, there is another way.  Fill a stock pot full of water and bring it to a boil. Turn the heat down to medium-low heat and CAREFULLY place the can of sweetened condensed milk into the pot and let it cook for about 2 hrs.  It's important to make sure the can is always covered in water.  Because of evaporation, I usually set the timer for about a half an hour and add a bit more water every time the time goes off.  After the time is up, you should have the same results as above.

Thanks for sharing!

I do this all the time... if you want the dulce de leche thicker, just leave it boiling a bit longer.

We use as a filling for cakes, also for crepes... its so yummy!

Sounds really easy!  Thanks for sharing.  My son loves caramel sauce for apples.

I have seen recipes for making it on the stove top, but your crockpot way looks soooo much easier!  Wondering, would you be able to make a few cans at a time and keep the sauce for when you need it?  Or should you open it right after cooking it?  Definitely adding sweetened condensed milk to my grocery list this week!!!

I know the crockpot method is awesome!  Literally no work involved in making this and it's way better than paying $2-3 for the stuff you buy at the store.

I'm not sure. I bet you could make a couple, I don't know how long you could leave it in the can though.  You could probably take it out of the can and freeze it in a plastic container. i haven't ever tried it though.

Oh, that would be a good idea to freeze it outside of the can, I would guess that would work.

But I guess it's really pretty easy to just set it and forget it wouldn't be that bad to make one at a time.

Yum! I made this on the stove top a couple times in college, but haven't had it in forever.

Okay, that's it, sending DH to the grocery store to pick up sweetened condensed milk on his way home from work tonight!!  And a bag of apples to go with it.
