Anyone read 50 Shades of Grey?  What did you think?  We read it for my book club with friends this month.  I did finish it, but ended up skimming in a lot of areas because I thought it was awful.  Extremely repetitive, very poorly written, and uninteresting characters.  No one who read it for our discussion enjoyed it.

For those who don't know what I'm talking about, here's a description:

"When literature student Anastasia Steele goes to interview young entrepreneur Christian Grey, she encounters a man who is beautiful, brilliant, and intimidating. The unworldly, innocent Ana is startled to realize she wants this man and, despite his enigmatic reserve, finds she is desperate to get close to him. Unable to resist Ana’s quiet beauty, wit, and independent spirit, Grey admits he wants her, too—but on his own terms.

Shocked yet thrilled by Grey’s singular erotic tastes, Ana hesitates. For all the trappings of success—his multinational businesses, his vast wealth, his loving family—Grey is a man tormented by demons and consumed by the need to control. When the couple embarks on a daring, passionately physical affair, Ana discovers Christian Grey’s secrets and explores her own dark desires.

Erotic, amusing, and deeply moving, the Fifty Shades Trilogy is a tale that will obsess you, possess you, and stay with you forever."

I have not yet, but it's on my Nook to read. I believe originally it started out as fan fiction for Twilight so I don't have high expectations from it to be a well written book. A few coworkers have read them and really liked them.

If Christian romance is as naughty as you like to go than these books aren't for you. ROTF.gif

Ellen Show did a clip on it where she was acting like she was auditioning for the audiobooks that was hilarious.

It wasn't that it is erotica that bothered me, it was just that it was the same thing happening over & over & over and being horribly written on top of it.  Yes, they did start out as Twilight fan fiction (which didn't give me high expectations going in, but it is so popular I was hoping that it would be better than I thought it was).

Well, being based on Twilight (with the names changed, now that it's published) the characters are obviously going to be generic. And most people don't write great literature when they're writing fan fic.  This was just born to be bad, in my opinion. (I haven't read it, but I did notice the 500+ 1 star reviews on Amazon.)

I haven't read it either, but I wish I knew what the author's secret is.  Even if it's a literary failure, you can't argue with its commercial success.  It's HUGE.

I just read about this book today in Newsweek magazine. The person talking about it was talking about the current rage with things about women being submissive and liking to be spanked, etc in sexual situations. They said that the writing was HORRIBLE and people must really want to read about submissive women to slog through reading a book like that waiting to get to the sex scenes.

Must be a lot of sexually frustrated people in your town. ROTF.gif (Just kidding)

Honestly they are very poorly written. You get to the point where you start skipping pages because they are doing it yet again. I'm on the 3rd one now. At this point I just want to see how they end up.
