People's shopping habits and the economy

Do you know what I also am surprised about with our economy?  My area is full of businesses selling brand new RV, campers, pop tops, and mobile homes.  We're supposed to still be somewhat in a recession, how the heck are people affording these things enough to evidently keep so many businesses in business?

When you lose your house, you need some place to live.

When we bought our micro-house in back, DH and I joked about if we ever lose our house, we'll rip that out of the back yard and live in it.  Probably at my mother's.  lol

Because despite the overall sucky economy, there are still people who have money and disposable income.

I think some peoples priorities are messed up. I know my in-laws where talking and that what my husband and I need is a little tent trailer. You can find them on Craigs list cheep. I immediately start thinking and then I have to get a hitch, and insurance, and licence fees, and it will cost more for the camp site and dumping fees and more gas to tow it. For what? once or twice a year when there are so many things we need that we can't afford at the moment.

My SIL has two one to camp in one to live in. Glad I am not in her situation.

I think many people are tired of doing without that they make mistakes and buy stuff after all the credit offers are always there.

If the average American has $10k in consumer debt, there you go.

Not everything is as it seems.  Back in the day you didn't have the $$, you didn't spend it and didn't have credit cards.  Now with credit it's easy for 'everyone' to appear to be in the black.  Not so.  We pay our credit cards off every two weeks and the only reason we use them is to get Disney Points, not because I can't afford to buy it right there and then.  But I think a lot of people do.  Just yesterday I was in Target and had a woman swipe probably six cards before she found one that wasn't rejected.  In her cart?  A bunch of pop, junk food, trinket jewelry, and hair elastics.

I wouldn't assume everyone is going into to debt to buy these things. My cousin and his wife just bought a boat. With cash. They're not rich by any means, just really disciplined with their money. They've always saved for the things they wanted. They've never had a problem going without little luxeries so they can eventually have the really big luxeries. When they were stationed in Japan for four years they saved every penny she made while teaching dance classes. Their daughter is going to graduate from college with no debt!

I admit I get tempted to buy things with credit.  But we really can't afford to add to our credit card debt.  We have enough debt and are trying to dig ourselves out as it is.  These days we have an "I want it and I want it now attitude".
