Holy moly!! I did not budget for summer lunches and snacks for the kids!!

And I am in shock over how much more my grocery bill is, even with me being careful and planning cheap!!  Anyone else find this?

My grocery bill is ridiculous in the summer, but not because of the kids. My dh is out of school so he works from home and he constantly eats. During the school year, there are snacks and basic foods in his faculty room he can grab, so he just takes leftovers from home for lunch. But, in the summer, I have to have enough snacks and extra food to keep him going (and teaching surf lessons all day is physically demanding, so he is always hungry, he's like a teenage boy)

I never really noticed that much of a difference. My kids took their lunches everyday to school, so in the summer, they'd eat mostly the same stuff. Instead of a sandwich and fruit for school, it would be a sandwich and fruit at home, etc. Are your kids just eating more or why is there such a difference?

I was just thinking that I have to go to the store to get some food for the kids. I am dreading it because they seem to eat so much right now!!

We pretty much eat the same too because we try to save money year round by packing our food for the day.  N is normally out at friends all week during the summer, so if anything, she probably eats less at home.

Ds took his lunch to school almost every day so I am thinking it will not be a whole lot different. Although we will probably eat out more. :(

We do go through more lunch stuff and snacks. To keep a handle on it I give the kids each 1 snack ticket a day they can redeem for a snack in the snack drawer. For lunches we go through way more raman noodles and bread. I need to take a trip to Baileys to stock up.

Based on your other thread it seems like the increased budget is due to you planning meal style lunches. Whatever they were bringing to lunch at school they can just as easily make and eat at home, meaning there shouldn't be any increased costs.  Were they getting free hot lunches or something?

I definitely go through more snacks. My oldest LOVES Gushers. I buy a set amount of boxes a month when I have coupons. She knows that when they are gone she is done so she doesn't tear through a box so fast. I save a lot of money by buying fruit and snack type crackers and pretzels at Aldi's.

My kid is wanting to eat all the time too.  I'm not sure if its because he's outside playing and swimming or what.  Why is it that swimming makes you so hungry?

He bought his lunch at school, so he prefers a hot lunch but I'm trying to make large portions of stuff.  Like he likes soup so I make a large pot for the whole week.

Then for snacks I'm filling him up on fruit, raw veggies and rice cakes.

I'm not really seeing a big dent in my budget so much, but I'm planning more to have things easy for him to grab.
