Travel Tips for Kids - Packing, Entertainment, Saving Money - Page 4

We let the kids pack a bag of things they want to have with them to "play" with for traveling.  Each bag also contains a plastic bag for their personal trash.  If a child is too young for a  plastic bag any kind of container would work.  Just something to help contain the mess of a long car trip.  They also get to take their pillows, a blanket and one stuffed animal when we travel by car.  Their blankets and animal go get stuffed inside the pillow case until they are needed.

I heard an idea somewhere about sticking little magnet pieces on the back of puzzle pieces...say like one of those preschool 20 piece puzzles or something.  Then you just need a magnet board or a small cookie sheet and your kids can do puzzles in the car.

I just stopped by this board, so I haven't read many of the ideas, but this one is great! Thanks for sharing!!

never tell your kids that you're going anywhere or exactly what you're doing until the last possible moment...that way you avoid the "when are we leaving" "are we there yet" "but I wanna go NOW".....and, just in case, if plans need to change, they won't have a meltdown because they didn't know where they were going anyway...so you can easily switch plans and make it seem like it was the plan all along......example, let's say you plan to go to the water park tomorrow, don't tell them until you're ready to leave for the waterpark...cause if you tell them the night before, they won't sleep, and then if you wake up and it's raining and can't go, they'll be cranky all day. Plus, surprises are always fun!

Travel with empty ZipLock bags!!  I always have 6-8 in each size!  Gallon, Quart, Sandwich size, and snack size!!  There is ALWAYS a need!!  Collecting shells on a beach, an opened and unfinished bag of crackers, crayons, wet clothes, a quick ice pack, keep brochures and travel papers dry, car sick (it happens!), collecting the kids trash and wrappers along the way, or for that deck of cards that the kids destroyed the box to!

I pack individual Ziplocs with everybody's snack in their own bag, so no fights about who ate what, start.

I have 4 boys to pack for, so I take each outfit roll it up and wrap a rubber band around it. That way all the outfits r matched up and I don't have to spend vacation time helping them pick out clothes.

Having the kids participate in packing their own travel bag (backpack) full of activities, toys, and books. Also bring a surprise activity, toy, or book for them. Cards, coloring book, activity workbook, books, puzzles, play doh, and Lego. From our library we get books on tape. With the cassette tape comes the book. The kids have the book on their "tabletop" in the car and read along to the audio. It's great. I also believe in each child having their own flashlight. While it isn't wise to use in the car, a flashlight can give so much entertainment to each child, it's amazing how much they love flashlights! So it's something to pack for them to play with and use once you arrive at your destination.  Finally, we play the "clue game"--it's something like 20 questions, not exactly, but along those lines. It goes like this.."I'm blue and white though sometimes gray, and you can see me anytime you want. What am I?" The sky. That wasn't the best clue, but my son loves this game...giving clues or getting them. The last travel tip I have is to make it fun. Journaling about your vacation spot by adding pictures and drawing is great for some children. Having printouts of images to color of things that relate to your vacation spot is a good idea too. Having a map that you created together that highlights landmarks that might be exciting for kids is also a great way to engage the child while traveling. Lastly, have that catchall trick that calms your child, a CD with calming music, a story, a book, a picture book of animals or pets, or grandparents, a magazine that the child can create a collage from...ripping, cutting, pasting, and telling about what they found and made really occupies them, and makes them feel accomplished and proud. You can also have the children look for pictures in the magazine that may relate to your trip. Guessing games, finding certain colors or shapes as they look at their window is fun too!
