Huge Welt from Bug Bite

N and R both seem to have severe reactions to bug bites.  Last night N showed me her latest ones.  They were 4 inches in diameter and very hot to touch (the rest of her skin was cool to the touch).

I did call the doctor's today and they told me that this can happen and to just give Benadryl and use a hydrocortisone cream.

Have you or your kids every gotten huge welts from a bug bite?  What do you do to help them heal quicker and relieve the itching?

This is me. I can get a good sized welt from a mosquito, and my legs are generally covered with welts or scars all summer long. If it is a spider, bee, wasp sting - HUGE welts. Ants - I can't see a welt, but I'll itch like crazy.

Benedryl doesn't help it at all, unless it is a wasp/bee sting, but I'll have to take constant benedryl for a week, and put ice on it.

For normal bug bites, I use an herbal ointment I get at the farm market - not sure what is in it. I learned a while back that for flea bites, which cause big itchy welts on me - that saltwater helps. Either get in the ocean or take an epsom salt bath. I bet that would help for mosquito bites too. I also found for flea bites, just last month, that applying hydrogen peroxide w/ a cotton ball helped a lot. I plan to try that this summer for the mosquito bites.

I might suggest the epson salt bath and the hydrogen peroxide for her--since we have that on hand right now.  I have to run to the store for the other stuff.  She's capable of running to the store too, but I know she won't.

my dd gets huge welts and I remembered a girl in grade school making a paste out of aspirin to put on hers and it helped her so I tried that with dd and she asks for it at times now.  I tried hydracortisone cream and it did nothing but I didn't give benadryl.

Epsom salt baths are wonderful for bug bites. I have a similar reaction to yellow flies and that is the only way I can get any relief.

I have bad reaction to any bug bites. I found anything that relieves it .

DH gets huge welts from Mosquitos. On the other hand, they don't last as long on him as they do me.

Last summer I was changing DS's shirt and saw a bite mark on him that swelled to the size of a softball. It was huge. No idea what bit him, spider, I assume.

Dd gets huge welts from bug bites.  I'm not sure what bugs do it to her though.  The first time I saw a huge bite on her what when she was 2.  It was November, it was cold, and the mosquitoes were long gone, so I took dd to the doctor.  He guessed that a spider bit her, but he didn't know.  I think he may have given her some prescription cream, but I don't remember for sure.  Now when I see huge bites on dd, I just do the Benedryl/hydrocortisone thing.

Thanks, everyone.  The welts have seemed to gone down, but are still huge!  The nurse told me that they wouldn't give a prescription for it so not to even bother coming in unless it gets worse.

I give dd bendryl orally as well as use the benadryl spray to the affected area.
