My friend is an ER nurse and she told me I could do both.   However, I would not want to say what works for one, works for everyone.

My little girls get big welts too. One summer one of them got bit by the eye and her eye swelled shut! We put an ice pack on the welt. The girls say it helps if the area is war,. We are using Aveeno anti-itch cream this summer. It seems to be working.

I went to summer camp for 2 years when I was 11 or 12. Both years I got bit by a spider while sleeping, next to my eye, and both years that eye swelled shut. They just put calamine lotion on it, which didn't do a thing.

I keep chewable Claritin tablets with me at all times just for this reason.  I haven't gotten any in a while, but I have gotten ant bites on the tops of my feet, kind of where your ankle meets your foot.  I get a large (not huge) flat purple welt, and about 2" around it I get a purple discoloration that looks like a bruise and is hot to the touch.  they also itch and take ages to go away.  As soon as any one of us gets a bite other than a mosquito bite, I give them or I pop a chewable Claritin.

We've always done baking soda with just enough water to form a thick paste, and then apply that to the bite/sting. It's an old school remedy, but it does help.
