I love Runkeeper for keeping track of my runs and calories burned. The Weather Channel app is great, too. I don't watch a lot of TV and my local news station's website is difficult to manage, so the weather app makes it easier for me to plan activities, such as pool and park, with the boys. I also like My Fitness Pal for keeping track of calorie intake and workouts. Not necessary, but it's something I enjoy and helps me feel a sense of accomplishment. I also like the Kindle app on my phone for reading sometimes when I'm in bed and can't fall asleep. I own some poetry books on the Kindle and I enjoy reading them and winding down before bed.

The battery does run down easily and that is a downfall. I am almost never without a charger.

I do like the Weather Channel app.

I will have to try runkeeper, thanks :)

I have an ipod, not an iphone, so I don't know if there is a difference.

I do like the weather channel, and google, for those quick moments.

I have downloaded many that get immediately deleted.

OH, I have a fertility friend app that tracks my periods.  That I find useful, so I can put a cranky day down to pms by fact!

The usefulness of the app depends on:

  • The app's design, ease of use and functionality
  • The person using it and their needs (what they hope to get out of it)

Apps I love may be of no use to someone else and vice versa.  Some are for pure entertainment, and while they're not "useful" they do get used.  A LOT.   My friend with celiac disease just showed me a cool app that allows her to scan any barcode for nutritional information and whether or not the product contains gluten.  It's VERY useful to her, but for me... not necessary.  My most used apps:

  • Instagram
  • Foursquare
  • Weather Channel
  • Facebook/Twitter/PInterest (Social)
  • Shopkick
  • My Radar (shows weather radar, useful in predicting storms)
  • Notes
  • Calendar
  • Yelp (while traveling)

Kim do you know the name of that celiac app?  that would be sooo useful for me, esp if it is a worldwide one!

I've never found apps to be a big drain on my battery.  I have the iphone 4S and I've never run out of battery in one day.  Once or twice I was close but I still had battery by the end of the day.  I used my Disney ones a lot when we were there and had no problems.  For the most part I only get free apps, but once in awhile I will pay a dollar or two for an app.  A lot of them are buggy and those I delete right away.  But I've gotten a lot of free ones that were awesome!

My favorite are our current local news and weather apps, facebook, Pandora, I have a "white noise" one, "Shleepy" that I use every night (when it is plugged in), Kindle, Zite (a magazine type).  I am always checking my mail too, and reading articles in my mail, etc. and have never found that to be a drain either.  Hmm.

I think battery drain will depend on which apps you are using, I have been using my phone apps quite a bit and my battery seems to last for a long time.  I have the iphone 4S now too.  I think if you use a lot of GPS type apps then that will really drain your battery fast.

I agree with Kim, the apps usefulness will depend on what the person wants and enjoys doing.

I'm definitely on the Pinterest app the most. I have a few game apps like Draw Something that gets used when I'm waiting somewhere or am bored. I love The Weather Channel app just to see what the temperature is going to be and such. I also use the mail app all the time to check my email. Otherwise, my other tops apps are probably Facebook, Pandora, and occasionally store apps when I want to check their ad real quick or see their store hours.
